Kaiser Permanente Division of Research’s Vaccine Study Center is committed to helping people live longer, healthier lives. Their team of researchers gauge the long-term performance of a variety of vaccines, ranging from proving a new shingles vaccine remains effective for more than four years, to making sure flu vaccines stay ahead of ever-mutating strains. These results are informed by millions of data points from Kaiser Permanente’s research bank, the Vaccine Safety Datalink, a data-sharing collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other health care organizations nationwide. “Our ability to study real-world use of vaccines over time with large, diverse populations is a unique contribution to the field,” said Dr. Nicola Klein, director of the Vaccine Study Center. 🛡️ Dispelling 3 Myths About the COVID-19 Vaccine and Boosters 🛡️ 1️⃣ Myth: The COVID-19 vaccine was rushed and isn’t safe. Fact: The COVID-19 vaccines underwent rigorous testing and met all safety standards. Millions have safely received the vaccine, and ongoing monitoring continues to ensure its safety. 2️⃣ Myth: I don’t need a booster if I’ve already had COVID-19. Fact: Boosters enhance and prolong protection, especially against new variants. Even if you’ve had COVID-19, getting boosted strengthens your immunity. 3️⃣ Myth: The vaccine can alter my DNA. Fact: The COVID-19 vaccines do not interact with your DNA. They work by teaching your immune system to recognize and fight the virus. This is deeply disturbing! Vaccines remain one of the greatest, single public health interventions of the last 100 years. They are crucial to our society and they are safe and effective. Misinformation is a huge problem and we really need to start addressing this!! “Vaccines must meet rigorous safety standards before being deployed and save approximately 3.5 to 5 million lives per year (World Health Organization, 2019). From the beginning, however, vaccines have faced waves of negative reactions from the public (Allen, 2007). These attitudes manifest in several ways: vaccine refusal, hesitancy, and susceptibility to misinformation. For the sake of brevity, we refer to all manifestations as “negative vaccine attitudes” (NVAs).”

Vaccination against COVID-19 and seasonal influenza is critical for public safety and, especially, the safety of the most vulnerable among us. The CDC has determined it is safe for you to get the influenza vaccine at the same time as the COVID-19 vaccine. The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) recommends that people with MS should receive the annual influenza vaccine unless they have a specific reason they cannot get it. There are, however, guidelines to receiving the flu vaccine: 💉 The AAN recommends against using live vaccines (e.g., FluMist nasal spray) in people with MS who are currently taking a DMT. 💉 For some DMTs, there are also restrictions from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the timing of a live vaccine after discontinuing a DMT. Prior to receiving a live vaccine, discuss the risks, benefits and appropriate timing with your MS healthcare provider.
