*You can't imagine What happened* It was a typical Tuesday morning at Sterling Tech, and Sarah's routine was set: coffee, emails, meetings. But today, something felt different. The office was unusually quiet, and a buzz of whispers filled the air. At 10 a.m., an unexpected email popped up in her inbox from the CEO. "Urgent All-Staff Meeting at 11 a.m. Attendance Mandatory." Sarah's mind raced. Was the company in trouble? Were there going to be layoffs? The tension was palpable as everyone filed into the large conference room. Colleagues exchanged anxious glances, their faces reflecting Sarah's own worries. The CEO, Mr. Reynolds, stood at the front, looking unusually serious. "I know you're all wondering why I've called this meeting," he began. The room was silent, hanging on his every word. "Today, we face a critical moment in our company's history." Sarah's heart pounded. She had always worked hard, but had she done enough? What was coming next? Mr. Reynolds continued, "We've been facing challenges, but we've also seen exceptional performances. One person, in particular, has shown outstanding dedication and leadership. Today, I am proud to announce a special promotion." The room collectively held its breath. Mr. Reynolds scanned the crowd and then, to Sarah's astonishment, his eyes locked onto hers. "Sarah Williams, please step forward." Sarah's legs felt like jelly as she walked to the front. "Congratulations, Sarah. You are our new Vice President of Operations," Mr. Reynolds announced with a smile. Applause erupted, and Sarah felt a wave of relief and pride. This tweet resonated with me last fall and I wanted to post it here as an encouragement to many who may feel that they are 'stuck' in their current opportunity, or they feel like they won't be noticed. https://lnkd.in/emNUa92d My career experience aligns with these post statements: “So when you're stuck, you've gotta find it within yourself to say, 'Ok, this is where I am. And if I'm going to be here, I'm going to be great.' Because if you're great at your job, typically other people and companies find out, so it creates opportunities.” "I'm going to be great", that's the mindset. In the spot you are in, are you going to work hard and excel/stand out? It's important to note that Brady's main change was not in his ability but in his attitude and approach. I know at CH2M, where we had over 400 IT employees, we were constantly looking for people who were going over and above and exceeding expectations. The person that was focused on being great in their current role. Those employees typically stood out and their peers and managers could see it. Lisa Marie Whitehouse, who managed much of our staff, would constantly have to fend off other department leaders who worked to promote and transfer her 'great' employees (Sorry Lisa). I'd stop by her office when I was in Denver and she would always say suspiciously, "Who are you after now Brian?". Be great with your opportunities and commit to improving yourself every day. That may involve going over and above at work or sometimes in your personal time. It may not happen immediately, but often, you will get noticed.  

So many opportunities ahead in 2024...and so much talent available in the market to continue to help Tenney Group grow. For all you leaders of teams and builders of businesses, what do you value more than talent and why (when hiring)?

Spoke with 4 different high-performers (P-Club, 2-4 years at the company types) in the past ~week who are moving on from their role (each at different companies). They're not leaving because of a: - new boss - change to comp plan - unexpected changes to their job - hard place to work - dream opportunity elsewhere Each said some combination of these two things: 1. Lack of clarity for how their role makes an impact (either at the company or beyond it) 2. "I didn't feel valued til it was too late" Want to keep your top performers? Give them a vision, make them feel valued.
