Being in the midst of graduation season, it’s an opportune time to reflect and celebrate all of your academic accomplishments. As you prepare to celebrate this significant milestone, it’s a great time to consider the environmental impacts of your festivities, whether a graduation or other gathering. By embracing sustainable practices, your graduation is sure to leave a positive impact on future generations and host a very special occasion for you and your loved ones. We have the opportunity to be responsible stewards of the environment as we celebrate. Materials commonly found at graduation ceremonies and parties, such as confetti, balloons and decorations often have unseen impacts and huge indirect carbon footprints that negatively affect fish, wildlife and even the water you drink. Here are some of the ways we can substitute traditional materials for more eco-friendly alternatives and have a zero-waste event while still preserving the joy of grad. Apply now! International TD Summer School 2024 in Catalonia (Spain) (MA/PhD) From September 14th until September 20th 2024 the tdAcademy will host their 3rd International Summer School on Transdisciplinary Methods, organised by ISST/UPC and ZTG/TUB. Transdisciplinary research and practice is an approach that allows to bring together different perspectives from science and society and to catalyse the solution of real-world problems. We're in a world undergoing significant change, dealing with issues like climate change, biodiversity loss, hunger, and inequality. Urgently, we need sustainable solutions, requiring adaptability and collaboration across disciplines and sectors. No single approach suffices; we must collectively work towards a sustainable society. This year the summer school focuses on land use conflicts in the region of Alt Empordá, Spain. It offers Master and PhD students from technologically-oriented disciplines (e.g. engineering, planning, environmental studies) as well as from other fields (e.g. social sciences) the great opportunity to gain insights into the basics and challenges of transdisciplinary research and practice. We will convey central know-how of how to plan a transdisciplinary project in different steps, gain experiences with carrying out methods for transdisciplinary research and get insights for your own thesis. Take your chance and apply until 30th of April! https://lnkd.in/d9UmyFBc

Have YOU thought about what your definition of sustainable development is? In Professor Robert Strand's Berkeley Changemaker Course on Sustainable Capitalism in the Nordics? , this is one of the first questions we are told to ask ourselves. When asked the question “ What is sustainable development?” Gro Harlem Brundtland, former Norwegian Prime Minister, answered “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” This phrase is one of the few pieces we are told to memorize for this class. The rest of our Monday classes are typically filled with colorful discussions anywhere from different types of capitalistic structures to individual leadership styles. We center the Nordic region as a compelling case study and benchmark for sustainability while remaining aware that no country or region is perfect. Sitting between people from across the world, I get to hear from 50 students coming from countries such as Canada, Sweden, France, as well as the United States. When researching courses to take during my final semester at the University of California, Berkeley, this one stood out as the perfect culmination of experiences I’ve had during my time in university. I often draw reflections from my time abroad as an exchange student at Utrecht University in the Netherlands during the Spring of 2023. Although it’s not part of the Nordic Region, it was an experience that undeniably broadened my perspective on what a society could look like as we orient ourselves toward a sustainably-minded world. This course also has become relevant at my current internship at 1% for the Planet where I often reference it in discussions of what societies can and should look like as we make transitions to a more sustainable future. As a global organization, 1% for the Planet brings together organizations and companies from around the world under its motto “all together for the planet” and my time here thus far has proved this to be more than true! In this final semester of my bachelor's education, everything is coming together as my studies come to a close. Living internationally, asking questions about different societies, and being back at my home university, this curiosity has not left me. I feel more than ever, that my conversations revolve in international contexts. Facilitating dialogue around culture is more relevant than ever as we grow into an increasingly globalized world. With graduation on the horizon in May, I continue to grow my curiosity as a learner and understand that there is so much to learn from every person and every place.

The YES Competition, inspired by UN Sustainable Development Goal 11, encourages young scientists to explore real-world environmental challenges through research, analysis, and collaboration. The competition is divided into two categories. These include the Primary level which targets students ages 7-11. Students in this category are encouraged to focus on practical solutions for sustainable living in urban spaces. The second category invites students between the ages of 11-18 to develop more advanced projects addressing resilience and inclusivity in communities.
