For too long, our needs have been misdiagnosed and misunderstood when we need healthcare. As a group of young autistic people, we are asking for an NHS fit for autistic people. Finty, one of our Young Ambassadors shares why this campaign matters so much. “As neurodivergent people, we have the power to campaign for better services and lead by example in the work we do.” Will you join us in asking Wes Streeting to close the #AutismHealthGap? bit.ly/4eq2vpl

Inclusion is not a word to be bandied about and neurodiversity is not a catch all description to suggest you/we/society ‘understands’. Autism is multifaceted and our healthcare system is not even close to understanding or addressing the issues faced. This time last year I spent a night in A&E with my teenage daughter who has an autism diagnosis. Amongst the multiple leaflets stuck to the glass in front of reception there was a copy heavy poster asking patients to tell staff if they had Autism so they could what? Adjust/flex/offer something different? I laughed inside - the placement of the ‘communication’ itself demonstrated zero understanding. This week I completed the legal documents to ensure a Lasting Power of Attorney is secured for health decisions relating to my now 18 year old son who is severely autistic, whilst I wait for funding approval for specialist support out of area in the hope of improving his severe OCD and depression. Falling in a gap and in part ‘dispute’ between mainstream psychiatric services and GP care, I am in charge of decision making about appropriate therapeutic and pharmaceutical support. Being a supporter of ‘awareness’ is not enough and campaigns like this are critical to ensure anyone of any age with autism has fair and equitable access to not only health but housing, education, and everything in society. #autism #inclusion #vulnerability #health

The Children’s Commissioner has called for urgent reform in social care, particularly for Children’s long-term care. Despite increasing funding and staffing, only 25% of those needing care receive it. To improve the service and ensure transparency, it is crucial to digitise the #CHC process, giving patients and caregivers more visibility of the care pathway. Digitising the CHC process can improve the quality of data pathways, support Integrated Care Systems and improve patient outcomes.
