Consider donating to the The LAM Foundation on this #GivingTuesday. LAM is a progressive, non-curable disease that affects mostly women. While there isn't a cure today, donations like today have allowed the LAM Foundation to work with the FDA and NIH to find treatments such as drugs to slow down the process, lung transplant procedures that are more effective, etc. LAM replicates very much like cancer cells. LAM clinics around the country are tied to cancer centers as they are hoping to share treatments and research for both LAM and different types of cancer (and hoping this cross-sectional sharing provides breakthroughs in both diseases). A: When higher education is under attack from extremism on every side fueled by a mass media and social media landscape that promotes conflict in order to weaken our institutions. When there is finally a push for the middle. When there is real optimism and progress toward bringing everyone together and putting the unity back into community. When there is a spark of hope that we are turning this thing around and returning to the values that make our country great. When we recognize that we are all stronger together no matter what our individual beliefs and that we owe it to one another to come together while respecting and embracing the issues that divide us. When we start to realize once again that diversity is a superpower and the American democracy is built upon differences in culture, differences in beliefs, and differences of opinion. When you realize that the institutions in our country that promote individual thought and academic freedom are the basis of our strength. When you see that our children are finally emerging from the cloud of Covid and learning again how to socialize and share their lives together. When you stop to remember how much the fraternities, teams, groups, organizations that were foundational in your college experience shaped the rest of your life. When it really matters. Why give to the School of Education Annual Fund for #VTGivingDay? Because we're challenging the status quo. Data shows public school teachers in America are much less diverse than their students - which is what Dr. Brenda Brand and Dr. Lezly Taylor set out to address when they developed a partnership for graduate students between Virginia Tech and Shaw University, a historically Black college or university (HBCU) in Raleigh, North Carolina. Javari Burgess (pictured below) is one of two students participating in the pilot year of the program. This program directly helps students and helps further the school's mission of challenging the status quo. Like many of our other initiatives, it is partially supported by donor funds.
