They should be able to work independently and respond quickly in difficult situations. The ability to listen and provide helpful advice is also very important. A good support worker should also have a good understanding of the law and have the ability to comprehend complex instructions. 🤔🤗🤝 Support workers often have to face difficult decisions and should therefore have good problem-solving skills. Shoutout to Madilyn Atkins leading #resettlement community of practice meetings for the state of Illinois! 😀 Fellow employment counselors and job developers, the one on Monday is on legal documentation for employment, with the Department of Justice itself! The goal is for us to improve our #advocacy and education with employer partners and thus be better able to assist our refugee and immigrant clients. I always tell my #refugee clients to use their social security card and state ID as soon as they have them, as these are familiar to employers. We want to keep things simple and easy when possible. However, I have developed advocacy tools with information on I-94s for newly arrived folks. Humanitarian parolees are recommended to use their employment cards once they arrive since their authorization is initially limited to about 2 years, unlike refugees and asylees. Yet these are just a few of the work #documents they can use! Tune in Monday to learn more -- and #employers, connect with us employment counselors if you see a document that's new to you. The first time through may take longer than normal, but we can work on the process together, to create smoother pathways for future candidates!
