More on the 3G issue with Telecommunication Companies Telstra and Optus in particular, and BMW Inadequacies 😡 😡 😡
I own a BMW 2015 125i car (less than 8 years old) and attempted to renew the booster which provides Active Traffic Navigation to find that it is now not available because the 3G sim in the car is being shut down. The advice from BMW is that the 3G sim can’t be updated to 4 or 5G – “It’s a Telstra/Optus issue as they are shutting it down”. This is absolutely outrageous – a $60k car is reliant on sim card that can’t be changed??? The shutting down of the 3G access has been known for at least 3 to 5 years, and it is unbelievable that that BMW hasn’t got a fix.

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We understand your frustration regarding the termination of the service and the warning about the 3G SIM in your vehicle being shut down. We want to assure you that we are equally concerned about the situation. Please know that the decision to shut down the 3G network is not within the control of BMW. This is a decision made by the telecommunication companies in Australia, as they transition to newer technologies like 4G and 5G.
Unfortunately, for older model vehicles like yours, the SIM card cannot be retrofitted to support these newer networks. We acknowledge that this situation is inconvenient and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience it may cause. Rest assured, we are continuously exploring potential solutions to mitigate the impact of the 3G shutdown on our customers.
In the meantime, if there's anything else we can assist you with or if you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to let us know.
😡 😡 😡 😡 My Reply to BMW
This situation is totally unacceptable. Yes the decision to shut down 3G was the telecommunication companies, but BMW cannot abrogate responsibility. BMW installed the Sim, as have many other connected applications, therefore BMW is liable. To say it can’t be upgraded is blatantly ducking the issue. Upgrading the cabling diverting to a new 5G Sim and reconnecting to the onboard circuit board should be possible. Yes it might cost, but do you care about customers at all.
This 3G issue has been known for years, and not to have engineered a fix to replace the 3G Sim is totally incompetent. As for your comment:
“Rest assured, we are continuously exploring potential solutions to mitigate the impact of the 3G shutdown on our customers.” I await you urgent advice.
Be advised that I will be sharing this appalling situation with my thousands of connections from the transport and business community on LinkedIn.
