Joy Hunt has experienced housing insecurity throughout the years, she understands the hurdles and complications of losing your housing. She knows the indignity homeless folks experience everyday. The first time she experienced homelessness, she was working a 40 hour work week, homeless, and barely affording a hotel room in Sacramento to ensure she wasn't out living in the elements. In turn, when she would reveal to people she was homeless people would reply "𝘞𝘦𝘭𝘭, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴." This begs the question, 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚? Homelessness does not look just one way, instead we must begin to break down those misconceptions and listen to stories like Joy that are unconventional but oh so common. ❤️Double Tap to like this post and share Joy’s story! Great news in the fight against homelessness! 🏠 HUD and VA have made impressive strides in recent years. HUD helped over 100,000 households transition from homelessness to permanent housing while starting work on 40,000 affordable housing units. The VA exceeded its goal, moving over 40,000 veterans from homelessness into homes, even in challenging markets like Los Angeles. These achievements show the dedication of homeless service systems, and we're determined to prevent homelessness through a new federal focus. One person experiencing homelessness is one too many. It's a complex issue, but let's celebrate the strides we make to solve it. At the annual State of Homelessness Address, we announced our third consecutive year of reductions in homelessness in Dallas and Collin counties, including the lowest total number of people experiencing homelessness in nearly a decade. 👏 According to the 2024 Point-in-Time count, a total of 3,718 individuals are experiencing homelessness on any given night in Dallas and Collin counties. That equates to a 19% reduction in overall homelessness and a 24% reduction in unsheltered homelessness since 2021. The strategic moves we’ve made as a community are showing results! But we still have work to do. Our community must continue investing in these effective solutions that will house more neighbors experiencing homelessness with the wraparound support they need to rebuild their lives. In recent years, homelessness in New York City has reached the highest level since the Great Depression of the 1930s. In April 2024, 131,940 people slept each night in NYC shelters. Thousands more (there is no reliable number, as the annual HOPE estimate is deeply flawed) slept unsheltered in public spaces, and more than 200,000 people slept temporarily doubled-up in the homes of others. Thus, it can be estimated that more than 350,000 people were without homes in NYC in April 2024. . . . Help us continue our important work! We can end homelessness together, forever. Housing is a fundamental human right. No one should have to worry about where they are going to sleep tonight. 📃 Source:Basic Facts About Homelessness: New York City; Coalition for the Homeless, Inc. #endhomelessness #endthestigma #doubledup #doubledupishomeless #housingisahumanright #winterwalk #nyc #newyorkcity #homelessinnyc

⭐KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON TACKLING HOMELESSNESS ⭐ Did you know that this Wednesday marks the first day of Spring ❓ Spring brings a mix of hope and challenges for the homeless. Let’s delve into what it means for those without stable housing: 👉Warmer Weather As temperatures rise, the harshness of winter subsides. For those living on the streets, this means less exposure to extreme cold, but it doesn’t eliminate their struggles. 👉Attention Shift Spring often shifts public attention away from homelessness. While people enjoy the season, the plight of the homeless can be overlooked. Advocacy and support may wane. 👉Continued Struggle Homelessness persists regardless of the season. Even with milder weather, basic needs like food, hygiene, and safety remain unmet for many. 👉Budget Challenges: The Spring Budget announcements can impact homelessness services. Unfortunately, recent budgets have fallen short in providing long-term solutions. While there are some positive changes, critical issues like housing affordability and benefit freezes persist. Remember, homelessness isn’t just about rough sleeping; it includes those in temporary accommodation, couch surfers, and others facing housing instability. Let’s continue advocating for lasting solutions throughout the seasons. Stereotypes surrounding homelessness often overshadow the diverse and complex realities faced by individuals and families. The stories of James and Judette remind us that no one is immune to homelessness, and many, like them, face this challenge with resilience, compassion, and transformative strength. After losing their baby son in 2018, James Eliscar and his wife almost became homeless due to overwhelming medical and funeral bills. This heartbreaking event inspired James to start a housing clinic for those facing eviction or foreclosure. What began as a community-driven initiative has evolved into Sarepta's housing pillar, empowering marginalized neighbors like Judette. After multiple evictions following her husband's sudden death, Judette found herself experiencing homelessness. Through legal aid and financial literacy workshops, Sarepta equips individuals like her to pursue homeownership and financial stability. Sarepta Women and Children Empowerment Center, one of our Community Action Grant winners, aims not only to address immediate needs but also systemic issues around housing insecurity. Join us in breaking stereotypes about homelessness and fostering a more empathetic society where every person's story is valued and respected. Why is affordable housing important? Because sometimes, the resources available in the community aren’t enough to stop people from experiencing homelessness. Over 1 third (36%) of Californians sought resources from their community and the government before their experience with homelessness. This number was even higher for adults in families experiencing homeless, in which over half (61%) sought supportive services before their homelessness began (2023 California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness. While there are many wonderful programs out there that can help prevent homelessness, this statistic shows the importance of housing that people CAN AFFORD TO KEEP, so they can remain safely housed and not risk entering the cycle of homelessness.
