Infectious diseases like #malaria are expected to intensify and change patterns with climate change, increasing the burden on current endemic areas and potentially reintroducing the deadly disease in areas where it had been eliminated. Every year more than 700,000 people die and millions are infected by vector-borne diseases, the vast majority from malaria alone, with a disproportionately high share in Africa. Children account for the majority of these mostly preventable deaths. This is one of many reasons that interventions like #PMC are critical to prevent malaria in young children, especially where the threat is year-round. 🌍 Recap: Partners Forum on Ending Neglected Diseases within Climate Resilient Health Systems Today’s forum hosted by the END Fund and Panorama Strategy brought together experts and policymakers to address a growing challenge: the intersection of climate change and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) like malaria. Vulnerable populations, already grappling with climate-related challenges, face a disproportionate burden of these diseases. The Executive Director of the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance PACJA, Mithika Mwenda, PhD shared insights on the gaps in the sector as well as working models to ensure that local communities are largely involved and engaged in ensuring climate resilience toward the effects of climate change. During the forum, participants discussed insights from the recently published Climate Action for NTD Elimination and Health Systems paper and the Climate change, malaria, and neglected tropical diseases: a scoping review by the World Health Organization. Key stakeholders from community organizations, governments, and multilateral institutions explored how to better integrate NTD elimination efforts with climate resilience strategies. The discussion highlighted the urgency of aligning political and financial systems to support the communities most affected by climate change—those contributing the least to it, but suffering the most. Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to this vital dialogue. On World Mosquito Day, we reflect on the profound impact that mosquito-borne diseases have on communities across the globe. Mosquitoes, though small, are vectors of some of the most challenging public health issues, including malaria, dengue, and Zika. In the pursuit of sustainability, our commitment extends beyond environmental conservation to include the health and well-being of all communities. During the launch of the Health National Adaptation Plan (HNAP) today, Dr. Herbert Nabaasa, Commissioner of the Environmental Health Department, highlighted alarming climate change impacts on health. He noted that malaria cases have surged from endemic to epidemic levels, with mosquito and larvae populations tripling and changing biting times. Food insecurity is worsening, leading to malnutrition, which underlies 40% of infant and child deaths, with 12% of infants born with low birth weights. Dr. Nabaasa stressed the urgent need for more research on the links between vector-borne diseases and the environment, as well as the importance of solarizing health facilities to build infrastructure resilience. With over $63 million needed to implement the HNAP, he called on partners to integrate climate change into their strategies as a collective approach to funding this critical plan. #UG_HNAPLaunch #HealthAdaptation #ClimateAction #InnovationForImpact #ResilientCommunities
