A little boy went into a drug store, reached for a soda carton and pulled it over to the telephone. He climbed onto the carton so that he could reach the buttons on the phone and proceeded to punch in seven digits (phone numbers). The store-owner observed and listened to the conversation. Boy: 'Lady, Can you give me the job of cutting your lawn? Woman: (at the other end of the phone line): 'I already have someone to cut my lawn.' Boy: 'Lady, I will cut your lawn for half the price of the person who cuts your lawn now.' Woman: I'm very satisfied with the person who is presently cutting my lawn. Boy: (with more perseverance) : 'Lady, I'll even sweep your curb and your sidewalk, so on Sunday you will have the prettiest lawn in all of Palm beach , Florida.' Woman: No, thank you. With a smile on his face, the little boy replaced the receiver. The store-owner, who was listening to all this, walked over to the boy. Store Owner: 'Son... I like your attitude; I like that positive spirit and would like to offer you a job.' Boy: 'No thanks.' Store Owner: But you were really pleading for one. Boy: No Sir, I was just checking my performance at the Job I already have. I am the one who is working for that lady I was talking to!' Moral: This is what we call 'Self Appraisal'. Every time if we don't get ahead of others, we blame others for it. We should look to our self and compare, find own weaknesses and work hard to throw away weaknesses. What was your first job in retail? My first job in retail was in 1983 shortly after I was thrown out of school. Just as well school could never had prepared me for life like this job did. At Hayes Hardware & MiniMix, you had to learn imperial even though at school you were only taught metric. This is because we sold plumbing supplies and threads and bits. So you had to be able to do the conversions in your head especially on the weekends when it was busy. You learned lugging of 40kg cement on a 35 degrees into a back of a trailer was tough and dirty. Your honesty and integrity were tested daily by tradies asking for an extra bag of concrete or length of timber. Not to mention being trusted with till which was all cash. My parents instilled that in me, not school. You learned to deal with the Master builders and the bad DIYers and once a Cult leader (true story) who was being very unreasonable about an axe he had misused. You learned the importance of taking down orders, making sure the store was tidy, keeping the shelves stocked, cutting keys, filling gas bottles, tinting paint & using power tools in the timber yard. I had the salt of the earth teaching me an alcoholic who worked when he could but after lunch at The Royal he was write off. Incredibly smart bloke though. All the machinery operators at the plant who had advice for the the 17yo, not all of it good. Plus the business owner, the store manager... but mostly the customers themselves. Get it wrong and you got full and frank feedback every time. Ecommerce is a bit more subtle but the feedback is in your data.
