This must never, ever, happen again. The final report into the Grenfell Tower tragedy which killed 72 people in London has found that the tragedy was caused by decades of neglect at many, many levels by many parties. (An earlier report prepared by Dame Judith Hackitt has previously found that the UK building regulatory system was not fit for purpose.) The message to all involved in building across all countries is clear. Every single party from governments to regulators to building practitioners, product suppliers, building managers and others who are involved in building design, construction, operation, maintenance and regulation must do everything in their power to ensure that no other families have to lose loved ones as happened at Grenfell. #achitecture #construction #engineering #property #grenfelltower Bronwyn Weir Prof (Adj) Kim Lovegrove FRSN, MSE, RML. So often, and particularly in urban environments, what you cannot see is what is really expensive. London is engaging in remedying years of mixing sewage and rainwater in a different way than most cities in the States are. While the engineering is fascinating (still not sure how to create the vortex), what most interests me is the architecture of the engineering; both the earliest sewers (a whole lot of bricks) and the elegance of today's concrete. Most of us do not give a 2nd thought to what happens when we flush the toilet. https://lnkd.in/eGjWdhm2

*** CLADDING REMEDIATION *** With #cladding #remediation projects it’s really satisfying to see the visual improvements to the building, as well as making the building fire-safe and #compliant. Here you can see the ‘before and after’ photo’s of a recently completed project – Axe Street in Barking, where we were responsible for the removal of all combustible materials and the external render and installation of a new, compliant, fire-safe, direct fix mineral render system from alsecco UK plus new aluminium balconies. One of the residents had this to say: “Now that the project’s complete, the building looks brand new. It’s arguably in a better standard than it was when originally built. It’s also really reassuring to know that the building is fire-safe now and means we can now sell our flats should we so wish to. Overall, the experience of working with T&T was a really positive one.“ #firesafety #buildingsafety #grenfell #residential #contractors #leaseholders #council #socialhousing #construction #loveconstruction

Up to 40 storey #towers for SkyTrain's Rupert and Renfrew Station Area Plan in East #Vancouver As proposed, the Rupert and Renfrew Station Area Plan calls for #residential tower heights of up to 40 storeys on several sites closest to both stations, deemed to be “Tier 1” sites. On Tier 1 sites, buildings heights of up to 40 storeys would be permitted for secure purpose-built #rental housing uses on high groundwater properties, with 80% of the units set aside at market #rental rates and 20% at below-market #rental rates. Tier 2 sites — select properties still within close proximity to the stations, but generally further away than Tier 1 sites — would have similar groundwater considerations, with the ability for above-ground parking. Is Mass Timber Construction About To Go Mainstream In BC? The potential new incentives from the City of Vancouver come less than two months after the provincial government announced that it will raise the current 12-storey limit on mass timber buildings to 18 storeys, under BC's building code, in hopes that the change will "expand the use of mass timber to build taller buildings and to make stronger communities." https://ow.ly/UupT50QApK4

Have you considered using mass timber and wondered what fire safety measures should be provided, and looked for a starting point? 🤔 🔥 We are delighted to share our risk-based guide to help fire safety engineers, clients and other stakeholders exploring the use of mass timber answer essential early stage questions, such as: • Can all of the mass timber remain exposed, or is encapsulation required (and if so, how much)? • Is a single-stair building compatible with mass timber construction? • Should mass timber be used within external walls? The guide draws on decades of experience within Arup both researching and designing fire safe mass timber structures. This expertise has been used to inform the development of many landmark projects, such as the Sky Believe in Better Building in the UK (https://lnkd.in/g7SSuGnf) and the Galkangu Bendigo GovHub building in Australia (https://lnkd.in/gUfms8fe). 🏗 🏭 Read more, and download the Guide at the link below, if you're interested: https://lnkd.in/g45hK-sR The guide is primarily targeted for use in the UK and other countries which do not yet have published fire safety guidance documents which address mass timber. However, there is a wealth of useful information within the guide which will help us all design safe, sustainable buildings from mass timber, where appropriate. 🧠 👩🎓 #WeAreArup #FireSafety #Excellence #MassTimber
