As the month of July comes to a close, it is important that I take this last opportunity to amplify the month of July as Disability Pride Month. Disability Pride Month, is a month-long celebration of people with disabilities, and their contributions to society. This month originated in the United States in 1990 to commemorate the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law on July 26, 1990. As a person who has lived with a disability (unilateral hearing loss) since I was a small child, I have immense gratitude for the creation of the ADA. People living with a disability have to navigate day to day complexities that are often overlooked and misunderstood by co-workers, friends, and family. The signing of the ADA into law created protection for people living with disabilities to request necessary accommodations to assist in navigating a complex world that is not built for them. The ADA has strengthened the quality of life of for people living with disabilities and fostered inclusion for current and future generations...it is now easier to thrive while living with a disability! #disabilitypride #disabilitypridemonth

Celebrating #NationalDisabilityIndependenceDay today! 🎉 The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in many areas of public life. Creating accessibility is a path to the "E" in DEI = equity. It's not complicated to be fair, but it does require conscious, deliberate, and strategic thinking. As an OD | DEI | HR practitioner, I find that using universal design concepts is one way of driving our world and workplaces to be fair and kind to all people. #equity #fairness #freedom #inclusion #consciousculture #universaldesign #humankindness
Today is #NationalDisabilityIndependenceDay—a commemoration of the day the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed. Today we celebrate National Disability Independence Day, which commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law in 1990. The ADA has had a profound impact, but we still have much work to do to continue building a culture that not only protects disability rights, but also celebrates disability pride. Here are three ways you can help to create a more accessible workspace: 1. Use captions in your virtual meetings, and when/where appropriate, save a recorded transcript for later distribution. 2. Provide agendas for meetings so those needing more time to process information to successfully share ideas have that space. 3. Include alt text on online images that describe what’s happening in the photo for those who may not be able to see.
