On Day 29 of #PreservationMonth, TTG showcases the United States Military Academy at West Point. The Tradesmen Group was selected to serve the US Army for historic masonry restoration. TTG performed a variety of masonry and concrete repairs, rehabilitation and replacement work, including granite stone wall reconstruction, stone and brick tuckpointing, stone cap lift and relaying, and stone cap replacement. TTG craftsmen also reconstructed brick and retaining walls and replaced concrete sidewalks and steps. Work was completed in 2020. West Point was originally established as a fort during the American Revolutionary War, as it sits on strategic high ground overlooking the Hudson River. It is the oldest of the five American service academies and educates cadets for commissioning into the United States Army. #SavingPlaces

The history of Naval gold lace or 'gold rings' is rather intriguing. Today's 'executive curl' was instigated to differentiate the military branch of the Royal Navy from the civil branch (such as the as auxiliaries, logistics and marine engineers). The military officers wore the curl, whereas the civil did not. However, from 1918 and ever since, the curl was rolled out across all branches. . When uniforms were first introduced within the Royal Navy in 1748, it would only be senior officers who would adorn with gold to denote their seniority and standing. Taking inspiration from senior army officers, the rule was; the more gilded a hem, cuff, pocket flap, coat skirt, breast or collar-the more senior your position. . By 1798 the Navy followed similar modes of adornment to the army in their gilt garments.Initially it was only Commanders, Captains and flag ranks that could display their rank thus in uniform. Flag officers would wear distinction lace on their cuffs for dress and undress uniforms. Ornate epaulettes were also employed as a symbol of gravitas. . Eventually, by 1856 the use of gold distinction lace was stripped to a more modest and tasteful display-incorporating the executive curl (reminiscent of cockades used in military millinery in prior centuries). . #navaltailor #royalnavy #navalhistory #navaluniform #uniformhistory #bespoketailoring #militarytailor

A really good long form article (with data) illustrating the tension at Service academies between the need for diverse perspectives in their officer corps and systems that often disadvantage the diverse individuals. While this tension is seen in the experiences of the socio-economically diverse and prior enlisted (both apply to me), it is most acute for racial diversity because it is an ever-visible part of a students identity. The academy prep schools like the United States Military Academy Preparatory School provide immense value by improving the access to and success of these more of these diverse populations. However, the core quantitative “meritocracy” of the academies present inherent challenges evidenced by the data in this article. The article sums up the challenges of quantifying every aspect of “merit” for officer candidates: “Owens has expressed concern that cadets are too often treated as numbers: their GPA or class rankings that determine who gets coveted assignments such as a place in flight school…But I've been talked down to more because of my class rank than because I'm a Black man." Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, Carlos Ruiz, emphasizes the importance of improving barracks conditions for enlisted Marines. He believes that if the military expects volunteers to serve, it is essential to provide them with safe and comfortable living spaces. Ruiz compares Marines to Division I athletes, stating that they deserve proper support. The Marine Corps has unveiled its Barracks 2030 plan, which aims to revamp living quarters and address issues such as mold and broken appliances. The plan requires a significant investment, with $274 million allocated for barracks modernization in Fiscal Year 2025. The United States Marine Corps has also requested an additional $230 million for this purpose. Ruiz assures that Marines are not asking for luxury, but rather for decent living conditions while fulfilling their duty. The focus on improving barracks aligns with the Corps' commitment to both modernization and the well-being of its personnel. #USMC #MarineCorps #BarracksImprovement #EnlistedMarines #MilitaryHousing #Barracks2030 #InfrastructureInvestment #SafetyandComfort #MarineWellbeing #MilitaryModernization #SupportOurTroops #InvestInOurMilitary #MilitaryLife #MarineLeadership

To understand the rank of Fleet Admiral, one needs to consider the context of World War II. The United States was working alongside Allies who had higher ranks like Field Marshals and Fleet Admirals, which were superior to American ranks. To ensure American senior officers were not outranked, the United States established the ranks of Fleet Admiral and General of the Army, both five-star ranks. In total, nine men held these ranks. For the Navy, they were Nimitz, Halsey, King, and Leahy. In the Army, the five-star generals were Arnold, Eisenhower, Marshall, MacArthur, and Bradley.

"Army Doctrine on Movers 2,500 Years Outdated" US Army TRADOC range doctrine on leading oblique moving targets is that a 45 degree oblique target requires "half the lead of a crossing target." See spec on the U.S. Army PEO STRI's new marksmanship simulator for Synthetic Training Environment CFT. Pythagoras knew better 2,500 years ago. The lead on an oblique target is the sine of the angle, which is trigonometry, which was Hipparchus, 2,150 years ago. The angular lead on a 45 degree mover is 71% of the lead on a crossing target. Which is evidently "news" to the U.S. Army Infantry School The Marines - PM TRASYS, Office of Naval Research, Weapons and Field Training Battalion - may get lead on movers right in 2024. From any angle 😎
