Return to School - Getting to Know Your School Introduction Welcome to our countdown to the new school year! Today, we will focus on getting to know your school. Familiarising yourself with the school’s layout, important areas, and key staff members will help you feel more comfortable and confident on your first day. Why Getting to Know Your School Matters - Reduces Anxiety: Knowing the layout of your school can help reduce first-day jitters. - Increases Confidence: Familiarity with the school environment boosts your confidence. - Enhances Safety: Knowing where important areas like exits and the nurse’s office are located can be crucial in case of emergencies. - Improves Efficiency: Being able to find your way around quickly helps you get to classes and activities on time. Tips for Getting to Know Your School 1. Take a Virtual Tour: Many schools offer virtual tours on their websites. Take advantage of these to get a sense of the layout. 2. Visit the School: If possible, visit the school before the first day to explore the grounds. 3. Study the Map: Look at a map of the school and memorise the locations of key areas like classrooms, the cafeteria, restrooms, the library, and the nurse’s office. 4. Identify Key Staff Members: Know who the principal, vice-principal, counsellors, and nurses are, and where their offices are located. 5. Learn the Bell Schedule: Familiarise yourself with the school’s bell schedule so you know when classes start and end. Activities 1. Draw Your Own Map: Create a map of your school from memory. This activity helps reinforce your knowledge of the layout. 2. School Scavenger Hunt: If you can visit the school, organise a scavenger hunt with your family or friends to find key locations. 3. Meet and Greet: If there’s an open house or orientation, take the opportunity to meet your teachers and other staff members. 4. Practise Your Route: Practise walking or riding your bike to school to become familiar with the route. Reflection and Journaling 1. Daily Reflection: Reflect on what you learned about your school’s layout and key areas. How does this knowledge make you feel about starting school? 2. Journaling Prompts: - Describe the layout of your school. Which areas are you most excited to explore? - How do you think knowing your way around the school will help you on your first day? - Write about any staff members you’ve met. How do they help students at your school? Final Thoughts Getting to know your school is an important step in feeling prepared and confident for the first day. Familiarise yourself with the layout, meet key staff members, and take advantage of any opportunities to visit the school. Remember, the more you know about your school, the more comfortable you will feel. By following these tips and activities, you'll be well-prepared to navigate your school confidently.
