Critically important story in USA TODAY on the local barriers to the clean energy transition, driven by misinformation and dark money groups. If we can't actually build this stuff, policy at the federal and state level becomes that much less effective.
Across America, clean energy plants are being banned faster than they're being built

This terrific news on both counts: 1) establishing this important initiative to bring factual information and pragmatism to the region's energy transition; and 2) Barry assuming leadership of the effort. Couldn't be a more informed, experienced and respected choice.
We're incredibly excited to announce the launch of the new Resource Works Energy Futures Initiative, a project led by former BC Environment Minister Barry Penner, KC. Energy Futures will explore some of the greatest challenges facing BC’s energy security, affordability and independence — answering the big questions on how we can meet growing energy demand while protecting our environment and economy, not just today but for the coming decades and century ahead.

Yesterday's lease sale means that Delaware, Virginia, and Maryland will be home to critical work to leverage the ocean as a source of climate solutions. Recognizing the untapped potential of the ocean and the urgent need for ocean climate action, the Biden Administration is driving an ocean climate strategy across the federal government (and delivering unprecedented levels of ocean and coastal funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act). Now, the US is poised to be a global leader on ocean climate action—and the Central Atlantic will play a key role in reaching our goals. #OceanClimateAction https://lnkd.in/gn6tTzvu

Research Fellow and Deputy Theme Lead, Local and Regional Energy System, UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) at The University of Edinburgh
Delighted to publish this Local Energy Planning report just after Ofgem opened their Regional Energy Strategic Plan policy framework consultation. We identify an important role for RESPs in supporting local energy planning – developing common modelling assumptions and open-source geospatial tools, as well as providing technical support. Five recommendations for effective local planning to accelerate net zero energy systems: > Consolidate learning from local energy planning across GB > Develop a consistent framework for local energy planning; including standardised data protocols and access > Treat local energy planning as a process not an outcome: prioritise accessible and adaptable modelling tools, not one‑off plans > Integrate community and citizen engagement in local energy planning > Focus support on translating plans into delivery and investment strategies https://lnkd.in/eMVKq5zC https://lnkd.in/emWGzENB
In this week's UKERC newsletter: New Publication Check out our new report on Local Energy Planning. Dr Jessica Britton and Janette Webb explore how to make local planning more effective to accelerate the net zero transition. Catch up on our webinar Watch our post-election discussion on energy policy. UKERC and British Institute of Energy Economics held a webinar discussing the recent UK election's impact on energy policy. Featuring Volker Beckers, Robert Gross, Mallika Ishwaran and Mike Thompson. CEES' new energy toolkit Community energy is taking a giant leap forward with the launch of the Community Energy for Energy Solidarity Energy Solidarity Toolkit. Confronting 'mobesity' in transport electrification The proliferation of large electric vehicles risks undermining the environmental and economic benefits of the green transport transition, argues Christian Brand, Professor of Transport, Energy and Climate Change at the University of Oxford and Co-Director of UKERC, in his latest blog.
