🌏💧 Team Spotlight from World Water Week: Sean We had the pleasure of asking Sean Furey, our RWSN - Rural Water Supply Network Secretariat Director, about his highlights from World Water Week, and his response really captured the spirit of the event. Sean shared that his highlight was reconnecting with long-standing colleagues and partners, while also making new connections. "It was really great to bring so many of our RWSN family together to celebrate the launch of our 2030 strategy and introduce our new Chair, Dr. James Origa, Ph.D," Sean said. When asked about his biggest takeaways from the week, Sean reflected on the wealth of knowledge exchange that took place. Safe water for life is a matter in rural communities.

Thinking globally, acting locally this Earth Day At our Foundation we have always appreciated our local community's respect for nature, outdoor recreation, and wanting to have clean water and clean air and healthy eco systems for all lives of nature to thrive. In honor of Earth Day today, we would like to highlight our efforts in local area to support our dedication to make our home - Earth a better place for all of us at present and for our future generations. We have different funds which support our local parks and environment:- Canton Trail Fund Canton Trail Fund is designed to provide grants to Canton Township for the building and maintaining of public bike and walking trails within the township of Canton. The intention of the fund is to be a supplement to existing and proposed future trail improvement, maintenance, expansion and capital construction activities of the Charter Township of Canton. Creating Habitats for Pollinators Fund The charitable purpose of this fund is to increase the amount of dedicated habitat for pollinating insects by planting native wildflowers in public and private spaces. We hope to engage communities, organizations, and individuals that might not otherwise support native landscaping. Our Lunch & Learn series has hosted several speakers to talk about environmental issues:- Healthy Yard Maintenance Annette DeMaria, Executive Director of the Alliance of Rouge Communities, provided advice and tips on creating a beautiful yard while protecting the Rouge River Watershed. Suggestions for fertilizer/pesticide use, mowing strategies, animal waste, and household chemical use were all discussed. Create Your Own Pollinator Garden David Hammond, Founder & Executive Director of Creating Habitats gave a very informative talk on Creating your own Pollinators Garden. Although pollinators are a critical part of our food system and the cornerstone of many ecosystems, they are in trouble. For the last two decades, pollinators have been under serious threat from habitat loss, climate change and pesticide use. One of the very best, and easiest, things you can do to help pollinators is to plant a wildflower garden at your own home. These wildflower gardens not only provide new habitats for pollinators to thrive, they brighten up your yard, and reduce yard maintenance costs. Eco-Burial Gives Michigan Residents Lower Cost, Environmentally Friendly Option. The way we live impacts the world. So does the way we die. It isn't death that creates ecological problems, but rather the processes for dealing with our deceased. Peter and Annica Quakenbush talked about different options offered to Michiganders.

Kids who grow up developing a connection to the natural world – having opportunities to play and learn outside, to become “environmentally literate” as part of their formal and informal educational experiences growing up – are more likely to make environmentally conscious decisions as adults. As developers, building owners, facility managers, politicians, and policy makers, such adults are more likely to see and act on the benefits of certification systems like #LEED, #WELL, and #fitwel. They’re more likely to advocate for and incorporate enhanced commissioning, better envelope design, continuous IAQ/IEQ monitoring, biophilic design strategies, renewable energy, electrification, better codes, walkable communities, and the funding needed for all of this. They're more likely to make meaningful decisions at the #conferenceofparties meetings and act on them afterwards. They’re more likely to see the inherent value in all of this (holding everything else equal). Creating regenerative, healthy environments (through new construction but even more importantly through the renovation of existing environments) while addressing climate change requires a comprehensive approach that plays the short and long game – and environmental education is a key component of that approach. So, if you’re looking for a place to donate to before the end of the year, an environmental education organization would be a great choice. Today, March 22nd, marks World Water Day, a day designated by the UN to raise awareness of the global importance of freshwater. This year's theme, "Water for Peace", highlights the vital role water plays in fostering cooperation, prosperity, and resilience across communities. Freshwater is essential for all life forms. It sustains our ecosystems, supports agriculture, and is fundamental to human health and well-being. However, billions of people around the world lack access to safe drinking water and sanitation. Water scarcity and pollution pose significant threats to our planet's future. World Water Day serves as a call to action. It is a day to reflect on our water usage habits and commit to becoming more responsible water stewards. Here are some ways we can all contribute: - Conserve water by taking shorter showers, fixing plumbing leaks, and aiming to consume 50 L/day. - Support sustainable water practices, such as promoting water conservation and wastewater treatment. - Raise awareness by educating others on the importance of water. By working together, we can create a future where water is a source of peace and cooperation, rather than conflict. Governments, businesses, and individuals all have a role to play in achieving this goal.
