Join Climate Impetus partners Lisa Andrews, Ingrida Bremere and Daina Indriksone, as well as Bodil Ankjær Nielsen from our sister project ARSINOE_EU for the session "Moving beyond scientific excellence: Mainstreaming transdisciplinary approaches in climate and WEFE nexus policy and practice for wider societal impacts" on June 11th at 1:30 PM as part of the Sustainability Research & Innovation Congress. Here, they will share their experiences of #TransdisciplinaryApproaches (TA) and explore how they can help tackle sustainability challenges by integrating different knowledge types and worldviews. TAs strongly focus on increasing the societal impact of research by enabling mutual learning and co-creating knowledge that is action-oriented, socially robust, and transferable for both science and society. Juha Uitto kicked off the opening plenary highlighting how evaluation must respond to the demands for sustainability in an interconnected planet. -Food Security Growing food is harmful to natural systems. How well does evaluation support and contribute to intervention and policy decisions to reach essential goals with environmentally sustainable agricultural solutions? -Transformational Change How can we design projects for transformational change? How do we evaluate for transformational change? -Fragile Conflict Vulnerable (FCV) How do you define feeling safe? "I don't have to sleep with all my clothes on at night." From fragility to resilience, this session explored the complexities of evaluating environmental programs in fragile, conflict, vulnerable zones. -Systems Design Quest This session explored diverse paths, challenges, and reflection exercises to transform evaluative thinking in today's environmental crises. -Transforming Evaluation Systems to Mainstream Sustainability "Evaluations shouldn't just check boxes- they should prioritize environmental sustainability." -Pollution, Chemicals, & Water Management How will organizations face the complexities of pollution, chemicals, and water management? From socio economic dimensions to community perspectives, how does evaluation shape sustainability? -Science Informing Evaluation Uncover the power of science informing evaluation. Expert panelists showcased how insights from various scientific disciplines enrich methodologies, from behavioral insights to data analytics. -Evaluation Networks and Communities of Practice Break out groups with leaders, managers, and users of evaluation networks discussed collaboration opportunities and how to maximize impact in environmental evaluation. -Sustainable Cities This session covered how cities are tackling sustainability challenges and explored diverse evaluation experiences and perspectives. -Socioeconomic Co-Benefits and Development Impacts Explored the intersectionality of socio-economic and environmental domains in evaluation. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g5M2_VSG Thank you to our conference co-sponsors International Evaluation Academy (IEAc), Global Evaluation Initiative, Earth - Eval, IDEAS - International Development Evaluation Association

I enjoyed watching this webinar on the "sustainability crisis and scientific societies" by Prof. Jürgen Rödel from Technische Universität Darmstadt. Presented as a personal and "emotional" dialogue between humankind and planet earth, this gives a great overview into the precarious state of the world and is an urgent reminder for action. Prof. Rödel describes how global political networks had some success in climate change mitigation (for example reducing chemicals causing the ozone hole), but overall the efforts are not enough and often fail to address the systemic nature of the problems. It is disconcerting to see how our political networks are increasingly under pressure in face of the multiple crisis including a war in Europe and rising populism worldwide. In this light, it is important to share two of the key messages: 1) Technology alone will not safe us. There is the need for integrated efforts to drastically reduce energy needs 2) Scientists have a role to play by thinking outside the box, collaborating across disciplines and countries, putting sustainability to the core of education, and becoming role models themselves in their settings. Associate Director, Focused Initiatives Team | Helping Grow and Organize North Carolina's Regional Bioeconomy
How do you build a bioeconomy that is not only economically sustainable but environmentally sustainable? Look to the regions that are building their bioeconomies from the ground up. Check out the blog post from me, Nazish Jeffery, Ph.D., and Sarah R. Carter, Ph.D. for the Federation of American Scientists that highlights a two-pronged approach on how to build environmental sustainability into the foundations of regional microbioeconomy strategies to ensure a greener future for everyone. https://lnkd.in/e6t7HeVK #Bioeconomy #Sustainability #Innovation

A great article was published last week in Nature saying that environmental scientists bring a crucial skill set to the corporate sector! - Formerly overseen by generalists, sustainability or ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) reporting, along with the business transformations it entails, now requires a more specialized skill set bridging environmental impact and business performance. - Conventional corporate expertise might fall short in meeting the increasing regulatory and stakeholder demands. Instead, trained environmental scientists — who offer a blend of scientific proficiency with corporate adaptability — are required; their skill set helps to prevent greenwashing and enables businesses to implement best practices based on scientific evidence. Happy to share our latest comment in Nature Reviews Earth & Environment, written with my brilliant colleagues, Daiane Faller, Dr. Mathilde Erfurt, Tracy Lane, Josh Hasdell, and Jane Eva Collins. Drawing upon our sustainability consulting experience, we highlight the unprecedented demand for environmental science expertise in the corporate sector. This trend will lead to new synergies between business, academia, and universities, create many alternative career opportunities for environmental scientists, and positively transform business practices and society. Exciting times! Happy reading, and we're curious to hear your feedback and opinion! Bioanarchy: The theme for this year’s Symbiocene reminds us that nature already knows about disruption - what can we learn? Our entanglement with volatile and shifting systems offers a chance to recognize our own abundance, rooted in a more-than-human world. We’ll need to learn from and recognize the intricacies of our relationships to reimagine futures for collective liberation . How do we root into chaos and elevate the disorderly? How does falling apart present a chance to come together in new and better ways? Moderated by Damien Gayle, Environmental Correspondent at The Guardian Featuring Kalpana Arias from Nowadays On Earth, Sophie Dembinski Head of Global Policy at Ecosia, Will Eliot from Biocrafting Studio, Professor David Luke, Technologists & Futurist Viraj Joshi, and Grace Boyle Tickets are available at the link below 🎟️ https://lnkd.in/g4RviwTA.. #sustainability #sustainable #climatejustice #londonclimateactionweek
