You have got to feel for the weather presenters this Spring. Somedays, they must feel like making the forecasts all up!! Personally, I've had my fill of rain and muddy puddles, and wet dog towels and cannot wait for the warmth of Spring sunshine. That said, accurate forecasting is invaluable to any business, and although I am no meteorologist, I do have a handle on our financial forecast. We've put in the hard work to maintain a long-term perspective on our business performance. We have nailed our data from pipeline to cash, allowing us to be agile and make smart commercial decisions. While forecasts may not always promise bright days ahead, we are resilient to handle any storm that comes our way, and that peace of mind is invaluable. Fingers crossed sunshine is here soon. #forecasting #data

We’re at the end of September, the first of the -brrrr months, and it certainly was a cold one. However, looking back at the weather headlines, we seemed to have heatwaves one week and arctic blasts the next! 🥵🥶 It just goes to show, the British weather is nothing if not unpredictable, which is why we monitor the weather 24/7. We use postcode-specific forecasts from the Met Office, allowing us to provide a tailored approach to winter maintenance at your property. We discussed the September chill and the accurate forecasting service we use in our latest blog, you can find it here 👉 https://bit.ly/4eMHoxt 🤔 If the September highs and lows have kept you guessing, it’s not too late to get in touch. Embracing Challenges: A Lesson from Nature I recently came across an interesting insight about how cows and buffaloes react to storms, and it got me thinking. Let’s start with cows. It's fascinating to note that when a cow senses a storm approaching, its natural instinct is to flee. If the storm moves from west to east, the cow will try to outrun it by moving further east. However, due to their slow pace, cows often find themselves spending more time in the storm's path than if they had stayed put. Now, contrast this with the buffalo. When a buffalo senses a storm, it moves towards it. Regardless of the storm's direction, the buffalo charges ahead, ultimately spending less time in the storm's path compared to the cow. This natural behavior reflects a valuable lesson for investors. Just as cows futilely attempt to evade storms, investors often try to time the market, hoping to avoid turbulent times. However, history has shown that market timing is largely ineffective. Instead, we should weather market storms with a well-thought-out strategy. So, as markets prepare for the next storm, ask yourself: Will you approach it like a cow, or will you charge ahead like a buffalo? Picture credit: Dall-E-3

I build spaceships and I control the weather! Our NASA award-winning technology will deliver earlier, 2X more accurate hurricane forecasts and improve all weather forecast models to reduce the cost of climate events.
The upcoming Hurricane Season is predicted to be one of the most active on record. Back in 2006, Dr. Kerry Emmanuel made the Times 100 of most influential people. 𝐖𝐡𝐲? From the TIME article: "Less than a month before Katrina hit, the journal 𝑵𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 published an extensive study that Emanuel had conducted in which he surveyed the power of roughly 4,800 hurricanes going back decades. 𝑯𝒊𝒔 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒔 𝒅𝒂𝒎𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒔𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒚. In that span of time — the period during which climatologists have been warning that greenhouse gases are steadily raising atmospheric and ocean temperatures—the power of the storms doubled. Warm ocean water is like nitroglycerine for hurricanes, and while many researchers had been predicting an explosion of more powerful storms, Emanuel, offered evidence that it was actually happening." 2006. It is now 2024. Science makes testable predictions. Deniers make it up as they go. Tiem has proven Dr. Emanuel correct. Dr. Emanuel is the Chair of Tropical Weather Analytics, Inc.'s Science Board and wrote the foundational White Paper on modeling hurricanes as a Carnot Engine. The basis behind the technology of our Hurricane Hunter Satellites. Earlier, more accurate hurricane forecasts across the entire globe are on the way. But we should have had satellites up years ago. https://lnkd.in/eJKu33uU https://lnkd.in/esWvW9Qf Nature Portfolio Roberta Boscolo Katharine Hayhoe AccuWeather National Weather Service NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration

Check out my Economic Letter showing how extreme weather causes uncertainty for affected firms that takes months to resolve. While the analysis presented here is based on hurricanes, we find similar dynamics for other extreme weather events like those hitting the US right now. The Letter is based on a paper, joint with Mathias Kruttli and Sumudu W. Watugala, that is now forthcoming at the Journal of Finance. Also tagging Augustus Kmetz and Alan Y. coauthors on the letter. #extremeweather #uncertainty
How do unpredictable impacts of extreme weather affect investor outlooks for businesses? Our latest Letter uses financial market outcomes to assess uncertainty about how hurricanes will affect businesses. https://sffed.us/41PLq2u
