Have you heard about the Willamette River algae bloom? Oregon State University researchers, like Desiree Tullos, are working to understand the ecology of the Ross Island Lagoon, and it's harmful impact on our community. OSU has joined with other nonprofit, public and private partners to chart a path toward a solution. Watch the full video to see how we are saving a river. #engineering #climatesolutions

Today marks World Wildlife Day, and this year's theme is "Connecting People and Planet: Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation." On this occasion, we reflect on one of our standout projects from the past year: Tracing the Wild. This generative art project, led by Chuma Anagbado, Nairobi Design (Week), Daria Smakhtina, and Seth Bockley, bridges the gap between digital innovation and wildlife conservation, transforming scientific data from Kenya Wildlife Trust into captivating digital and physical artworks. It's a testament to how creativity and technology were able to come together to tell the powerful stories of Kenya’s Maasai Mara three lionesses: Mama Kali, Sintamei, and Naramat, in their ecosystem. This dynamic, data-driven art bridges the gap between humans and lions. As we celebrate the beauty of ecological data and the innovative ways it can connect us to our planet, let's continue to push the boundaries of conservation. Check more details of the project, link in the comments! https://lnkd.in/d7iudx88 #WWD2024

Something incredible -- a true story of hope -- happened this week: the Chilean government met with Kristine Tompkins, co-founder of Tompkins Conservation, and Fundación Rewilding Chile, to sign a protocol agreement to create a new national park on the southernmost time of the Earth called the Cape Froward National Park. This establishes the creation of a new protected area of over 300,000 acres, similar to the size of Grand Teton National Park in the United States. It is a rugged region and refuge for highly endangered species, a transitional ecosystem between land and sea, where diverse marine life, including Magellanic penguins, Peale’s dolphins, and Sei and humpback whales, feed off nutrients provided by the Antarctic, Pacific and Atlantic currents and coasts are lined with dense kelp forest. Subantarctic forest covers nearly half of the proposed donation area, which also features 24,710 acres of peatlands, an ecosystem considered critical to carbon storage and climate change mitigation. I am deeply honored to have been able to contribute my part to the funding of this new protected area. View this exquisite land in the video. https://lnkd.in/gbWhre48 And if you want to know how you can support similar global initiatives, check out my slightly nerdy but fun primer here https://lnkd.in/giT35ngt

As we navigate a global climate crisis, small island developing states are at risk. The #Caribbean region is on the frontline, and as the effects of climate change increase, so does the vulnerability of Caribbean production systems, ecosystems, tourism, and infrastructure. ITC #Alliances4Action, together with Jamaica’s Alligator Head Foundation and Coconut Industry Board develop partnerships that foster #alliances for environmental stewardship that goes hand in hand with #sustainable #production and #trade. Developing #climate-smart solutions from ridge to reef ensures diversification of economic opportunities for coastal communities that protect people and planet. Here, Nickie Myers explains the concept of blue-green growth, and what role the Alligator Head Foundation plays in addressing these challenges through alliances from ridge to reef. This initiative is funded by the European Union and supported by the Government of Jamaica and the CARIFORUM Secretariat, under the 'Alliances for Coconut Industry Development for the Caribbean'. https://lnkd.in/dJ4mFqS3

Another thing I've done as part of the ESRI GIS For Climate Action MOOC. As part of section 3, I made a 3D viewer instant AGOL webapp of a sea level rise scenario. In the scenario, I conducted an analysis on building to show what year that different buildings will be inundated by sea level rise in an intermediate-high scenario. I found this quite interesting as a way to showcase climate scenarios in a way that can illustrate the issue of sea level rise. I also see it as a way to show what areas can be focused on for climate change mitigation and city planning This is viewable by everyone, so here is a link if you've like to check it out: https://lnkd.in/e3J4aQKR #gis #esri #climateaction #mooc #climatemooc

Freshwater Ecosystem Restoration comes in all colors, flavors and landscapes. DId you know that in some countries, over 25% of the streams and freshwater ecosystems are in forests? Are we holistic enough when we think about restoration? Clearly Climate Change Mitigation and biodiversity conervation go hand-inp-had with restoration!

The World Wetlands Day, celebrated on 2 February, raises global awareness about the importance of wetlands for #humanprosperity and a #healthyplanet. The 2024 theme “Wetlands and Human Wellbeing” focuses on the interconnectedness between wetlands and various aspects of human wellbeing, including physical, mental and environmental health. Wetlands offer vital #freshwater, hosting over 100,000 species. They sustain humanity, exemplified by rice grown on wetland paddies, a staple for three billion people, contributing to 20% of global food. Additionally, wetlands act as natural shock absorbers, mitigating rainfall impacts and lowering flood and storm surge risks. This video from the FAO exemplifies the importance of our Wetlands. https://lnkd.in/g6NK_uTk #WorldWetlandsDay
