Rangers are integral to so many development opportunities in remote Indigenous communities: In Wadeye, a remote Northern Territory community, traditional owners have embarked on a pioneering oyster farming trial involving over 100,000 baby oysters, aiming to foster job creation and generate income. This initiative, in collaboration with the NT Department of Industry and local Thamarrurr rangers, explores the cultivation of tropical blacklip rock oysters in the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf's tidal waters. The project draws on the successful trials on South Goulburn Island, Groote Eylandt, and the Tiwi Islands since 2015. Traditional owner Tobias Nganbe views this venture as a model for leveraging Indigenous-owned land for sustainable business opportunities, benefiting the community and future generations. The oyster spat, developed in Darwin, is nurtured in dynamic cages off Wadeye's coast, with regular grading to ensure optimal growth. These oysters, integral to Indigenous diets for millennia, promise a swift return on investment due to their rapid growth rates, with a market launch anticipated in two to three years. The biodiversity market is unchartered territory for producers, but for growers and graziers, measuring natural capital will be critical for market access in the future. Follow the journey of two Central Queensland graziers, Melinee Leather and Melanie Shannon, who were some of Australia’s first cattle producers to undertake natural capital accreditation. A scrubby hedge and autumn-sown bumblebird margin providing an invaluable wildlife corridor alongside this crop of carrots. This particular margin attracts a payment of £747/ha under the 2024 Sustainable Farming Incentive, with an additional £26/100m of hedgerow for getting the flail out less often! The autumn-sown bumblebird margins on this farm are often used together in rotation with spring-sown winter bird food plots and home to an impressive number of grey partridge. Options such as these, as well as tussocky grass margins, annually cultivated areas for arable plants, and pollen and nectar plots, when used in conjunction with one-another across the landscape, can have a far more positive impact on farmland wildlife than if placed in large, isolated blocks. Careful consideration needs to be taken when choosing which options to use where if we are to produce the greatest benefits for wildlife without creating unnecessary hassle and work.

Cows on the Vista - National Trust - Nostell 🌳 Ever wondered where the cows on the Vista come from & why they are there? Well, wonder no more... Paul Dibb(nostell) has kindly given us the answers 😋 The Parklands at Nostell, are managed by the National Trust, & are maintained through traditional cattle grazing practices under an Environmental Stewardship & Countryside Stewardship Agreement. What is Environmental Stewardship & Countryside Stewardship: The parkland at Nostell is managed under these agreements, requiring specific grassland management practices, including cattle grazing & hay meadow management. Cattle Grazing: 💚 Cattle grazing is a necessary component of the management plan, as stipulated by the agreements. The grazing period runs from May 1st to October 31st each year, with up to 80 cattle (including calves) present. The possibility of extending grazing into November depends on weather & ground conditions. The cattle are Hereford & Hereford-cross breeds, known for their docility but still deserving of respect 🐮 Management of Fields: Fields are divided into permanent pastures & species-rich hay meadows. Permanent Pastures: Grazed by cattle from May to July in areas like Upper Vista, Plane Tree Hill, & Sheepwash Fields. Hay Meadows: Closed to cattle to allow wildlife to thrive & grasses/wildflowers to go through their natural growth cycle. These include Lower Vista, Longley Field, Wragby Field, Obelisk Park, & Foulby Park. After July, hay meadows are cut, the hay is dried, baled, & removed, followed by a period of aftermath grazing. Income and Conservation: 💷 The rent from the tenant farmer & income from the stewardship agreement are reinvested into the estate for conservation work. Fencing: Upper Vista and Plane Tree Hill are protected by electric fencing for cattle containment, while stock fencing is used elsewhere. Covering 20 hectares, the wood pasture features a 30% tree cover, including oaks, hornbeams, wild pears, and more. The agricultural system of: goats, sheep and lambs has been structured in the wild for centuries; it is not an animal that lives in a stable or farm (like cattle or bovine).
