20+ Years in Sales & Client Engagement Management Professional ▸ Account Management ▸ Customer Experience Advocate ▸ Stakeholder Engagement ▸ Negotiation Management ▸ People Leadership ▸ Business Development
⚜️Why a Job at Gieves & Hawkes Saved My Life Even before landing a job at Gieves & Hawkes, I always had an interest in fashion and style. Admittedly, it was a different type of style—louder, more branded. I never could have imagined that one day I’d be working for one of the most prestigious British menswear institutions in the world. It all started when I was walking past the Gieves & Hawkes store in Chester and noticed an ad in the window for a sales associate role. “I can sell rain to the clouds,” I thought to myself. The next day, I dropped off my CV at the store. The shop, back then, had a bell on the door, and the atmosphere was calm yet intimidating. An older lady greeted me, and to my surprise, she seemed to take a liking to me, asking questions with genuine interest. Still, as I left the store, I thought, “There’s no way they’ll hire someone like me—a loudmouth chav.” At that point in my life, I had always been in sales, but it was mostly general roles: door-to-door, shop sales, cold calling. I was also living a bit recklessly—partying too much, spending money I didn’t have, and indulging in distractions. I was heading down a bad path, no doubt about it. The day after I dropped off my CV, I got the call: “Could you come in tomorrow for an interview with the store manager, Mr. Goldberg?” I said yes, but deep down, I thought, “I’ll go, but there’s no way I’ll get this. They’re way too posh, and I’m way too common.” The interview went “okay-ish.” But there was one thing Mr. Goldberg said that stuck with me: “This isn’t just a sales job. This is a role that can change your life if you let it.” At the time, I brushed it off, thinking, “Yeah, yeah, just tell me the salary.” But I got the job. And as it turns out, Mr. Goldberg was right—it did change my life, and I truly believe it saved it. Here’s how: • The biggest lesson I learned was how to carry myself and communicate with people I’d never been exposed to before—high-net-worth clients, professionals, and true gentlemen. • I learned the value of punctuality, organization, and consistency. • I discovered the finer things in life. For instance, Mr. Goldberg once told me, “Stop wearing Polo Sport aftershave. Go see Suzie at Penhaligon’s and tell her I sent you.” That day, I bought my first proper fragrance—Penhaligon’s Douro, a scent I still wear to this day. • I learned how to sell with pride and authenticity—no gimmicks, just a genuine appreciation for the beautiful British tailoring we offered. The list goes on, but one thing is certain: this job set me on a path I never thought possible. Even today, having “Gieves & Hawkes” on my CV still carries weight. The moral of this story? Never underestimate the power of an opportunity and the lasting legacy it can create.

🌷Has your career stalled? Tap into your network for a seamless transition to your next dream job, aligning with your current life season | Career Transition Coach | Visit my website to download your free guide!
Are you being overlooked by employers during your career transition? Growing up, there were always those go-to stores my parents took me and my siblings to whenever we needed something. 🥿 - If we needed shoes, we'd go to Payless ShoeSource. 🦒- If we needed toys, we'd go to Toys "R" Us. 🧥 - If we needed coats, we'd go to Burlington Coat Factory. These stores clearly did something right! They mentioned exactly what they sold right in their brand name and customers came to buy just that. This approach worked for Burlington Coat Factory... that is until they were overlooked by their new target customer base. People still thought of them as only a coat store, even though they reinvented themselves and also began selling clothes, housewares, shoes, baby items, and much more. Therefore, to attract the right customers the company dropped the "Coat Factory" and kept only "Burlington". Then on their signage, they added the tagline of "Ladies - Mens - Kids - Baby - Home - Coats" to specify all of the items they offer. If you are planning to make a career transition, I want you to take a page out of Burlington's book. Let go of a job title or career function that no longer serves you. Be courageous and rebrand yourself. If you are being overlooked by employers for your ideal target roles, it could be because they don't see you as the right fit. Are you seeking to transition to a new career? Or have you made a courageous career move in the past? Join us for an inspiring discussion on how courage can be a motivating force when seeking new career opportunities. We'll share our personal stories of how we demonstrated courage along our career journeys. 🎉Welcome back Rafa! 🎉A fantastic addition at a pivotal point, the final quarter of our financial year! I hired him as a Team Leader in Amsterdam 5 summers ago to start September 2019! A lot has changed since then. I was a Senior TAC, now Managing the UK/Nordics/CEE region. Rafa, returns as a newly appointed VP/Senior Manager. I've got married, he's reconnected with our company, now rebranded from FRG to Tenth Revolution Group! Besides giving Rafa a very warm welcome back where he belongs, I've been thinking recently about #recruitment & #time. Everyone always says what a crucial difference time makes, gaining a fresh perspective. Admittedly, if I hadn't stuck out the many challenges (and there's been plenty when I almost walked away) no way would I have reaped the phenomenal rewards! Last year was one of the lowest in the industry for a variety of reasons, many can't help can't harking back to the 'golden era' post covid boom! It's not quite back to where it once was but with a downward curve, there's always a climb with time! TRG are primed as niche specialists in cloud tech rec which statistically will always be in demand as the world revolves around IT! So for anyone debating #recruitment #sales in #Newcastle or #London or even worldwide (we transfer senior staff... just saying!) but not sure it's the right time... it never is really! Most people are always dealing with something somewhere and hey, it's tricky to 'make time' to interview. But it could be your most empowering decision to date! Entering an environment with a clear, fair platform to truly take control of your earning potential & career progression! Based simply on your personal results, not if the stars align or any other nonsense where you have to just sit patiently to 'wait and see what happens' and work out what your options are! Has this struck a chord enough to learn a little bit more? It's never a waste of time comparing something confidentially! Would I have had 5 promotions elsewhere? Who knows if they'd even had the room or roles available until someone resigns, relocates or retires! That's before we even get to countless Lunch Club fine dining experiences... 🤤🍾 Don't get in touch if you're a quitter! There are no quick wins. Only time to learn, time to get better, then time to be brilliant. 📧 s.mckinnell@tenthrevolution.com (0191 3387524 direct) 📱 🔉 Get in touch with myself, Salome asap or Kate (Monday) 📅 #recruitment #sales #time #hiring #welcomeback #newcastle #london
"They say you always return to the places where you were happy". After some time away, I'm thrilled to be rejoining Tenth Revolution Group an agency I proudly consider one of my homes. Thanks to Paul Briggs and Mathijs Huibers for this opportunity, with special shoutout to Samuel Hooper who played a pivotal role in my return. I'm excited to work together to create the best work environment and deliver top-tier recruitment services for both our candidates and clients.

THE AMAZING TEAM I think we are lucky at Surplex UK Limited, we have a great team. Harmonious, hard working and fun. This doesn't happen by accident it is created by a first class working environment. Now IT disposal is hard and heavy work and the Team do their respective jobs without grumbling. Why? Let me tell you! Great pay, no-one earns minimum wage at Surplex UK Limited, we pay a proper, realistic and generous living wage. Free coffee, tea and food - yep, a well stocked kitchen with hot and cold drinks, toaster, hot sandwich maker, microwave, fridge and cupboard crammed with food - we don't have set break or lunch times, just help yourself when you are hungry! A shoulder to cry on. If anyone has a problem they come to me. I listen and offer the advice and support I think is appropriate. If it is money, then I will lend it, open ended just repay me when you can - it always comes back, sometimes in dribs and drabs, but always fully repaid eventually. Mistakes happen but if someone makes a mistake they admit it immediately because they know that a) we all make mistakes from time to time and b) we don't have a blame culture, we pull together to resolve problems. The banter is amazing. I hear jokes being shouted across the workshop and gentle ribbing between the different departments. But when the chips are down they stand shoulder to shoulder and get the job done. That's why they are amazing, the greatest team in the world. #team #surplexuklimited
