F*CK THE PRINCIPLES OF THE TREATY OF WAITANGI BILL 🖕 The Wild Ones have officially submitted our opposition to the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi Bill. This Bill undermines the foundation of our nation - Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the partnership between Māori and the Crown. Why we strongly oppose the proposed Bill: - It redefines the Treaty’s principles, dismissing decades of progress. - It disregards Māori sovereignty (tino rangatiratanga) and their role as equal partners in Aotearoa. - It was developed without meaningful Māori consultation, breaching trust and goodwill. - It threatens systemic equity and risks undoing hard-fought gains. - It deepens divisions, weakening Aotearoa's social fabric. We urge Parliament to reject this Bill and protect the integrity of Te Tiriti by ensuring Māori voices remain central in shaping our shared future. 💬 Join the kōrero: What does Te Tiriti mean to you? How can we ensure equity and justice for all? Let’s stand together for a future built on partnership, protection, and participation. 🔊 𝗙𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗕𝗔𝗖𝗞. I have seen a numnber of posts that say the new Treaty Principles Bill does not reflect the original meaning of the three clauses. None of these posts or articles postiviely define what those principles should be or are. Therefore they are incomplete. The Treaty Principles Bill to my understanding attempts to take the meaning of those three clauses and extend it to all people in New Zealand. That has been clearly explained by David Seymour. But the opposing position that the 3 clauses or principles have been misinterpreted has not been accompanied by explanations of what the clauses do mean. The way that legislation works is that now is the time to correct the Bill to ensure the Treaty interpretation is correct.
The Treaty Principles Bill is being introduced into Parliament today. As Te Rōpū Whakamana i te Tiriti o Waitangi - The Waitangi Tribunal found in its report this week, the Bill is an appalling breach of te Tiriti. The principles outlined in this Bill do not reflect what the Treaty/te Tiriti actually says or what was intended when it was signed. The Tribunal has recommended that the Bill be abandoned. The Tribunal acknowledged the evidence from both claimant and Crown witnesses in its findings, noting "Officials rightly warned that the Bill posed a threat to social cohesion and that it could generate division. Māori will feel the brunt of the division and even social disorder that could ensue. We are also concerned that if the Bill is enacted, it would unsettle the constitutional foundation of Aotearoa New Zealand. This is something that should concern the whole nation. New Zealanders, Māori and non-Māori, may have their faith shaken in our constitutional arrangements by this Bill." I would encourage all New Zealanders to take the time to read the Tribunal's report themselves to see what is proposed, how we got to this point and the effects. #tetiriti #toitutetiriti #legislation

Find Te Rōpū Whakamana i te Tiriti o Waitangi - The Waitangi Tribunal Report here: https://lnkd.in/g64kSkWH "We found that if this Bill were to be enacted, it would be the worst, most comprehensive breach of the Treaty / te Tiriti in modern times. If the Bill remained on the statute book for a considerable time or was never repealed, it could mean the end of the Treaty / te Tiriti."

The Treaty Principles Bill that has been introduced misinterprets Te Tiriti, ignoring the practical knowledge and academic scholarship over decades. what is the point of talking about evidence-based policy if evidence is ignored? Let's all make this an opportunity to show just how strong the support for the current interpretation of Te Tiriti is. Toitū Te Tiriti!

💫 Today, the Indigenous Peoples of Aotearoa/New Zealand celebrate #Matariki, the Māori New Year. The celebrations are centered around the concept of whakapapa, which refers to interconnectedness of all living things. 🇳🇿 Mataraki became an official public holiday in 2022, which reflects the growing recognition of Māori traditional knowledge and practices in #New Zealand, where #IndigenousPeoples represent 16.5% of the population. Yet, Māori rights to lands and self-determination are still not fully recognized under the Treaty of Waitangi which has limited legal status. 🌪️ Māori connections to their land (whenua) is also increasingly threatened by #climatechange. Natural disasters, like Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023, weaken the exercise of Indigenous Peoples´ continued occupation of their traditional lands. 🤝 Nonetheless, 2023 also saw an important achievement related to #Māori law and custom (tikanga) with the release of a study by the #NewZealand Law Commission working on a path forward for more respectful engagement between tikanga and state law. 👉 Read the full article in The Indigenous World 2024: https://bit.ly/4bSAMw3 #WeAreIndigenous #humanrights

What's going on in Aotearoa New Zealand that is a very serious concern? The NZ Government has put forward a proposed Principles of Waitangi Treaty Bill that would profoundly undermine the integrity and importance of this foundational agreement between Māori and the Crown. My submission opposing the Bill is attached. Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Waitangi Treaty) is at the heart of Aotearoa New Zealand. The spirit and intention of Te Tiriti o Waitangi was to embed mutual understanding, recognition and respect of commensurable and incommensurable aspects of belonging, sovereignty and justice, to ensure and sustain enduring Māori cultural, social, economic, environmental integrity and well-being. What a remarkable thing. #WaitangiTreaty #TeTeriti #humanrights #Aotearoa #culturalintegrity #decolonisation For background and to make a submission: https://lnkd.in/gpkUHy_t

"This submission highlights four key areas of concern where the proposed Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi Bill impacts the industry. In our view, the Bill poses significant challenges to the collaborative and inclusive framework essential for ACE members to deliver projects that align with Māori values, community expectations, and national regulations. "By creating uncertainty and undermining respectful engagement, the Bill risks weakening partnerships central to effective and culturally sensitive infrastructure delivery. "ACE New Zealand remains steadfast in its commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, efficient infrastructure delivery, and respectful engagement with Māori communities that upholds tino rangatiratanga and cultural autonomy. We will continue our work in Aotearoa underpinned by our commitment, independent of the change(s) the Bill is seeking to make." 👉 Read ACE New Zealand's full submission on the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi Bill https://lnkd.in/gKrjq7Jv #TreatyPrinciplesBill

The Treaty of Waitangi in policy making Do have a look at this recording of the popular IPANZ event exploring the application of The Treaty of Waitanig to policy making. You will draw your own wisdom from it, but we noted: balancing priniplces with practice; value relationships - go slow to go fast; and to always apply free and frank advice as in all policy advice. We hope you enjoy this. https://lnkd.in/gqD_KPB5 #treatyofwaitangi #policymaking #publicservice

The State of the Māori Nation: A Call to Action As shared at Rātana Pā, the state of the Māori nation has reached its highest level of concern in many years. Rahui Papa’s kōrero to Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and ministers resonates deeply: the sanctity of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and genuine collaboration between tangata whenua and tangata tiriti must remain at the heart of our journey forward. The challenges faced by Māori communities today are not isolated—they impact the fabric of Aotearoa as a whole. Strengthening these relationships requires more than policy; it requires respect, understanding, and a willingness to listen. Let this moment serve as a reminder that Te Tiriti o Waitangi is not just a historical document—it is a living, breathing foundation for a united and inclusive future. Now, more than ever, we need to ensure that our actions reflect our commitment to equity, manaakitanga, and kotahitanga. Whether in governance, business, or community, we each hold the responsibility to amplify these values and foster spaces where Māori voices are heard and honored. ‼️Aotearoa thrives when we all thrive‼️ #TeTiriti #MāoriNation #RātanaPā #Equity #Collaboration #Kotahitanga #TangataWhenua #InclusiveLeadership #Aotearoa #Manaakitanga

I have made my submission on the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi Bill, and I invite you to do the same if you don't feel aligned with the Bill. If you want to submit but don't have the time to write your own, you can copy and paste the script below - thank you, Daria Williamson - I have used your wording, which is aligned with my views on the matter, and it took 5 minutes to complete. Each submission is counted as a unique submission, even if the words are exactly the same. "I oppose the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi Bill. The Bill is in breach of Te Tiriti o Waitangi itself. It has proceeded against the advice of the Ministry of Justice and the Waitangi Tribunal. The Regulatory Impact Statement recommends retaining the status quo. The Bill is fundamentally flawed in its aims, assumptions, and content and should not be permitted to pass into law. The Bill is in direct conflict with Aotearoa New Zealand’s obligations under the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The translations used in the Bill are egregiously inaccurate. The Bill attempts to create three principles that do not exist in Te Tiriti o Waitangi. It is an attempt to unilaterally rewrite the terms of a long-standing treaty in a way that is diametrically opposed to the original document’s intent. This is completely unjustifiable and would not be countenanced for any other treaty to which the Crown is party. Many of the country’s leading experts in te reo Māori have outlined serious flaws in the translations relied upon in the Bill." Make your submission here: https://buff.ly/3CFH4CB. Submissions are open until 7th January 2025. #ToitūTeTiriti 🖤❤️🤍

Indonesian bills for indigenous communities are crucial for several reasons, such as aim to secure land rights for indigenous peoples, ensuring they have legal recognition of their ancestral lands, which is vital for their livelihood and cultural identity. Furthermore, see the article I wrote on kompas.com here https://lnkd.in/g8N2Wsfi
