Greater sage-grouse depend on sagebrush landscapes, but those ecosystems are disappearing. Grazing can be damaging, but in some situations, it can benefit the insects the birds depend on. https://hubs.li/Q02mmyMV0

When you think of Southern California, what plants come to mind? Living amidst the non-native palms, citruses, and eucalyptuses, several species of oak trees are hubs of life. These keystone trees are known to support over three hundred vertebrate species and almost five thousand insect species. A moment from one of our latest shoots, camera in hand and exploring what's beneath the surface in our UK waters. Did you know that seagrasses are the ocean’s only flowering plants? Over millions of years seagrass has slowly ‘devolved’ back into the water, and as such provides a truly unique ecosystem for countless fish, invertebrates and microscopic life. According to Project Seagrass, these ecosystems can support up to 30x the number of species as surrounding areas. And, like kelp forests, they are a fantastic store of carbon. Seagrass ‘meadows’ have been one the decline in the UK for the past century, thanks in part to disease, dredging and sewage dumping. It’s more important than ever to make sure these incredible habitats are protected and restored.

Often, conserving unique keystone species helps us conserve many others. One such case is the pinyon jay – a beautiful, dusky blue bird symbiotically tied to the piñon-juniper woodlands of the Southwest. Without these birds to disperse seeds, the ecosystem will suffer. Why are cork oak forests natural fire-retardants? This ecosystem is extremely fire-resistant. Cork oak trees, in addition to being less flammable, are also a species that more easily repopulates burnt areas, which should be considered in replanting initiatives after forest fires. Birds like TOUCANS are vital for the rainforest ecosystems; that's why ESI protects toucans in the natural ecosystems. Large-seeded plants will suffer seed dispersal limitation in human-modified and non-modified landscapes if seed dispersers like the Toucan are absent or unable to disperse their seeds.

Humans ignore birds more than any other living animal. However we all seem to be fascinated by dinosaurs. Birds are the next great decent of dinosaurs. They actually are mini dinosaurs if you really inspect them&their genetic makeup. we want to play "jurassic park"& bring home fossils&wish we could have t-rex in our backyard. yet these birds (all birds) are just that...&we are killing them off one by one...millions by the millions. All over the globe. without birds (which are nature's music soundtrack...w/o them it would be the greatest silence in the wilderness and the city alike, that u could even imagine) this world will go to hell. The birds who disperse seeds, do us Humans a tremendous service. Not to mention the birds who eat so many insects. Like the barn swallow for example, who eats even BLACK WIDOW SPIDERS which obviously protects us Humans even more. So next time your outside, no matter where your at...look up &tell them thank you. Let them know your trying to save them. We can't afford to lose any more of these intelligent, fascinating creatures.

Happy #MangroveDay! Did you know that, in addition to providing many other benefits, many coastal and marine ecosystems (like mangroves, salt marshes and seagrass meadows) sequester and store large quantities of carbon? Because of this, these areas are also referred to as ‘#BlueCarbon Ecosystems.’🌊🌳🦩🏝️ On this #mangroves day, dive into our Atlas map viewer to see where these vital ecosystems are found in North America 🗺️ 👉https://lnkd.in/g6daAEU
