Science & Policy for People & Nature: Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services | #Biodiversity
Info
The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is an independent intergovernmental body, established by member States in 2012. It provides policymakers with objective scientific assessments about the state of knowledge regarding the planet’s biodiversity, ecosystems and the benefits they provide to people, as well as the tools and methods to protect and sustainably use these vital natural assets. Our mission is to strengthen knowledge foundations for better policy through science, for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, long-term human well-being and sustainable development. The work of IPBES can be broadly grouped into four complementary areas: • Assessments: On specific themes (e.g. “Pollinators, Pollination and Food Production”); methodological issues (e.g. Scenarios and Modelling); and at both the regional and global levels (“Global Assessment on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services”). • Policy Support: Identifying policy-relevant tools and methodologies, facilitating their use, and catalyzing their further development. • Building Capacity & Knowledge: Identifying and meeting the priority capacity, knowledge and data needs of our member States, experts and stakeholders. • Communications & Outreach: Ensuring the widest reach and impact of our work.

I attended a fantastic webinar this afternoon with WWF Fuller Fund, hosted by Becky Chaplin-Kramer and her colleagues on the IPBES #Nexus Assessment. One of the most impactful things I heard was a comment by Taylor Ricketts that the customary practices of global Indigenous Peoples are already delivering on biodiversity conservation, climate action and other solutions we desperately need to address the multiple and interlinked crises we face on our precious 🌍 (climate, nature, food, health, water). Taylor's comment aligns well with my own experience working with Indigenous People in the northern boreal for many decades, such as the critical role of cultural burning in maintaining habitat for biodiversity as well as sustaining local food security. While "nature's contributions to people" are increasingly being recognized by academics, NGOS and policy-makers, we must not lose site of the fact that this relationship is reciprocal. And that the stewardship practices of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities contribute to many of the benefits we receive from nature. Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities' knowledge, their rights, and traditional governance systems must be recognized and explicitly supported in our collective efforts to prevent planetary collapse (nature, climate, health, food, water), especially in the implementation of global policy agreements #GlobalBiodiversityFramework. #DecolonizeSolutions #IndigenousConservation #Biocultural

Could it be any more apposite to end Season 4 of the IPBES podcast with a focus on 'Endlings' (the last individuals of a species going extinct)? If anyone ever told you biodiversity is overly clinical/lacking emotion - they need to hear this episode! Voted 'favourite all-time IPBES episode' by 2/3 of our production team, it's a must-listen! Kudos to Brit Garner for an incredible job and to Richard Miron, Anouk Millet and everyone else who made Season 4 such a great success!
