Black Home Initiative is an assembly of 85+ community organizations committed to a single goal: create 1,500 new Black homeowners in the next five years. "We know we can’t do that with the inventory that’s out there," said HomeSight Executive Director Darryl Smith. In many communities, there's an intractable cycle of housing prices rising that become unaffordable for many working people; yet, efforts to expand the housing supply hit resistance of local neighbors using their political power to block approvals. In this podcast, I feature two advocates who share stories of how we can make progress - centering greater community engagement: Janne Kimberly Flisrand shares how the City of Minneapolis, with broad citizen engagement, created a systemic scale of change towards homes for all. You’ll learn about how the group Neighbors for More Neighbors rallied people to support new housing and the Mapping Prejudice project allowed people to see the harms of historical discrimination. April is National Fair Housing Month! The Federal Fair Housing Act (FHA) was enacted 53 years ago as Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act on April 11, 1968. While the FHA was a significant step forward in combating housing discrimination, there is still much work to be done to promote diverse and inclusive communities where everyone can thrive and have access to equitable resources and opportunities. Access to affordable housing continues to be a significant issue, particularly for marginalized communities such as low-income individuals, people of color, and those with disabilities. #Repost @tbo.harlem ・・・ So here we go with the BUUUUULLLSH*T! 😡 As part of a settlement of a federal lawsuit that claimed current policies perpetuate racial segregation, New York City will reduce the number of affordable housing units it reserves for LOCAL residents applying for “housing lottery” apartments in their own neighborhoods. Under the terms of this settlement, the city will reduce the percentage of affordable apartments set aside for people living in the same community district as a new development down to just 20 percent from 50 percent until April 2029. Starting in May 2029, that share drops even further down to 15 percent. I’m hard pressed to imagine how NYC’s lawyers weren’t able to make a case to actually increase the limit, much less, have such a weak argument that it ended up reduced. This is a clear benefit to developers and an accelerant on gentrification in the city’s lower income black and Latino neighborhoods, especially ones with good proximity to Manhattan. These new developments are also hardly affordable for neighborhoods like Harlem where the median income is approximately $50k, yet to even qualify for these so called “affordable” units, you must make over $100k.
