I use this as an analogy for performance in the workplace. Sometimes you have really talented people! But the soil they're in is not right. One may think it's a problem with the individual. Does it really matter? In the bustling rhythm of board meetings, strategic planning, and navigating the ever-evolving market trends, it's easy for us, as business leaders, to become enveloped in the microcosm of our work. However, every so often, an opportunity arises that beckons us to look beyond our corporate confines and make a real, tangible difference in our wider community. Today, I want to discuss such an opportunity—an event that, despite my usual reserve from personal public posts, I feel compelled to share with my peers in the business world.   The Boys and Girls Club of the Big Bend is hosting its annual Steak & Burger Dinner in 2024, an event that not only serves as a celebration of the achievements of our at-risk children and teens but also as a crucial fundraiser to ensure the continuation of support and programs dedicated to their growth and safety. As CEOs and business leaders, our attendance and contributions can make an incredible impact.   Why is this event so significant, and why should it matter to us as business leaders? The answer is twofold. Firstly, the value in having a direct impact on the lives of young individuals is immeasurable. By supporting organizations like the Boys and Girls Club, we contribute to a safe haven for children and teens to learn, grow, and thrive. These are future leaders, innovators, and perhaps future employees who, with the right support, will go on to achieve great things.   Secondly, attending the Steak & Burger Dinner is a testament to our commitment to corporate social responsibility. Thanks for your article in F&P (Fundraising & Philanthropy) magazine, Steven. Valuable advice for #charities. Do you have advice about admin + overheads for grant-seekers? In my experience, non-profits - especially those new to grant fundraising - can feel uncomfortable requesting a high funding amount. Your advice to people who are "shy" about asking for what they need is spot on: "describe what you would do with more funding if available". Sometimes organisations undervalue the costs associated with a grant. Applicants request funding that is not enough to cover the cost to deliver the program, forcing them to use reserves or other funds (donations, bequests) to make up the difference. Charities should request an amount that covers all the "hidden costs" required to write, deliver, measure and acquit the grant, including staff time, and a percentage of the organisation's running costs. This amount should also make allowance for the funds needed to ensure the organisation is sustainable - investment in capacity, governance, innovation, staff development and raising the next dollar (fundraising). The sector is becoming more aware of the need for greater flexibility in grant funding. More funders are awarding grants with less restrictions so the money can be directed to where it will have the most impact. Initiatives such as Reframe Overhead + Pay What it Takes are encouraging charities, funders and donors to change the conversation. Could programs like Penfolds' help to educate grant-seeking non-profits to account for the cost of being sustainable in their approach? If you didn't know I am letting you in on the secret. The must not miss event of VenueConnect is the DILC Celebration for a Cause. It's an opportunity to spend time with the best in the industry for a great cause. There is laughter, dancing, drinks, and stories you would only believe if you attended. Many of you may not know but one of the responsibilities of the DILC committee is to provide over $20K in scholarships to IAVM educational opportunities to individuals in underrepresented populations. The majority of the funds raised for these scholarships are done with dollars we raise during this annual event. Since 2020 the donations have started to become smaller and smaller. I am reaching out to my network to help spark the giving. We are asking for individual donations of $67. If 300 people donate $67 we can hit the $20K before we even have the event. I have over 3K connections. This should be an easy ask. You don't have to be an IAVM member to donate. You don't have to attend VenueConnect or the event to donate. Here's what's HAPpening: ♻ Weekly check-in with our Plastics Collaborative Program Manager to set the stage for our next coalition meeting. 🌿 Productive discussions with a foundation in the plant-based food space, exploring exciting collaboration opportunities. 📸 Welcomed a new volunteer photographer to our team - visual storytelling is key to our mission! 🐾 Engaged with wildlife protection advocates nationwide at our bimonthly coalition meeting. 🍻 Brainstormed with our events team about an upcoming summer gathering. 🎓 Absorbed invaluable insights at a nonprofit development webinar, constantly striving to grow and learn. 🤝 Came together for our monthly all-volunteer meeting, celebrating the power of teamwork and dedication. 🌎 Hosted an enlightening Serving Up Sustainability webinar session, featuring Heidi Fritz from Greener by Default. 🦁 Contributed to the biweekly Endangered Species Coalition meeting, amplifying our commitment to conservation. 🔗 Stayed synced with our marketing and grants teams, ensuring alignment and effectiveness. 🔍 Our ED Natalie Ahwesh participated in a thought-provoking Executive Director Huddle, sharing insights on nonprofit leadership best practices. 💻 Collaborated with State Reps. Beth Chandler has made an indelible mark on our city. I’ve had the honor of serving on the Board of YW Boston since 2018. That was the year that Beth began her leadership as President & CEO of this crucial Boston organization. In 2020, I became the Board Chair, which gave me the opportunity to work more closely with Beth. Beth is stepping down this summer, after 12 years with YW Boston and six as its head. With her guidance and advocacy, YW Boston has made Boston a more equitable place for the benefit of all residents, in particular women of color. Beth stewarded the non-profit through historic challenges, from a complex strategic planning process to navigating the pandemic to selling the landmark Back Bay building. She also seeded the growth of diversity and inclusion throughout our institutions.  I’ve learned a lot from Beth over the years. From her strength—she’s very direct, and stands up for what she believes to be right. From her willingness to listen to different opinions and perspectives, and change her mind. And I particularly appreciate her combination of vision and strategy. Anyone who wants to make transformative change in their organizations can learn lessons from her tenure. When she led us in a deep probe into the meaning of our mission, she helped us focus on who our beneficiaries really are: not just the clients we consulted or the participants in the program, but the colleagues and clients of those people. She saw how YW Boston was a catalyst, inspiring and supporting people to be change agents in their own organizations. I vividly remember when the Board was discussing a tough decision. We’d been losing money on a volunteer-facilitated service. She wanted to hire staff to deliver it more effectively and charge a fee. We were anxious about the risk of hiring people with a budget deficit. Beth presented the alternatives clearly: we could gradually bleed out over time, or we could take this risk and build toward a sustainable model. She recognized it was the time for bold moves. We agreed. And when the demand for DEI services exploded, we had the people we needed and we were well positioned to provide the services. She also knew that boldness isn’t always about expansion. When I joined the board, YW Boston had 10 or 12 programs—we were spread a little thin. Beth and the leadership team honed the portfolio basically to three: Inclusion Boston, LeadBoston, and FYRE. These, along with advocacy campaigns like parity on boards and United Against Racism, share a theory of change: they build a group of people who have a real deep understanding of equity and inclusion, so that they can go back to their organizations and create change.  That vision has helped create a better climate for everyone. I give Beth my gratitude and my personal admiration, for all that she’s done—for YW Boston, for so many organizations that have worked with us, and for the City of Boston.
