100 Seats for Misfits: Do you have your ticket? I loved how Myah described her Company: 'It's a training ground for the misfit.' A misfit is someone who does not fit easily within a particular group or environment—I’ve been a misfit all my life. What about you? A misfit is someone whose behavior or attitudes differ from the norms of the group they are in, making them stand out or sometimes feel out of place. I bet you have felt out of place at one point or another too. I don’t call myself the 'accidental banker' because I fit perfectly in this world—I am a misfit. Isn’t it great when you find a group, an organization, or a friend where being yourself is celebrated? That’s exactly what they are doing with this program. I call this kind of program a training ground for the underdog. I refer to this type of effort as 'the but for.' But for an initiative like this, people who are looking to find their way wouldn’t get the exposure that could be the tipping point directing them toward their purpose! I, for one, am all for giving people platforms and positioning them to reach the next level. I want to celebrate these ‘misfits’—will you join me? The auditorium holds 100 people—let’s pack it! The arts are crucial for sparking creativity and passion, and I hope to see you there. Let me know if you will join me—I will be attending. Myah, thank you for your leadership. How can we adapt Forum Theatre to build dialogue between communities affected by wildfires? How can we use Forum Theatre to deconstruct polarizing narratives of the Self and the Other? How can we use this method to avoid violent escalation and devise collective action across the divides of conflict? The article I just published in Peacebuilding (co-authored with Lorenza Fontana and Caleb Johnston) addresses these questions and presents an innovative contextualization of Forum Theatre to transform socio-environmental conflicts. Development and Alumni Engagement for Student Support and Sport at Oxford University | Stakeholder Relations and Major Gifts Fundraiser | Chartered Manager | BA (Hons) MBA (Kent) MSc (Oxon)
PREACH! ...and not just because of my overwhelming bias towards University grassroots sports. An important reminder on the wider benefits of sport beyond health, focus, and discipline. Particularly relevant as clubs open their beginners courses at the start of the academic year (here and across the country). Many sports clubs welcome staff members so do consider getting involved if you're interested in starting something new! "Because sport is not just about science, physiology, stopwatches and progress, but also about aesthetics, play, friendship, community, laughter, mystery and memory: the attributes of art and the humanities, or what it means to be human. I learnt as much on playing fields or the river as I did in the classroom, and as others do in the theatre, or concert hall." Vice Chancellor's Annual Oration 2024
Vice-Chancellor Professor Irene Tracey has delivered her annual Oration to the University in the Sheldonian Theatre. Read the full speech ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/en56nTv7

More about our creative dementia research in this wonderful podcast
Research by University of Northampton's Dr Alison Ward and University of Derby has found benefits of using a form of arts/play originally developed for mothers and babies for people with young-onset dementia and their carers and enhancing the bonds between them. The full findings will be discussed at a Knowledge Café in Derby on 18 September. See the news story (with link to podcast where Dr Ward discusses her career and other dementia research projects) for how to attend. https://lnkd.in/eBZ-geeC Jacqueline Parkes/Dr Clive Holmwood PhD/Gemma Collard-Stokes (PhD)/Ruth Hughes-Rowlands/Dr Jordan Elliott-King/Karen Anthony/Phil Harper 💚💙🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ #dementia #dementiaresearch #art #arts #creativearts #theatre #research #university #northampton #derby
