Did you know that 67% of grocery shoppers will pay MORE for a unique shopping experience? Yet most supermarkets still compete solely on price. I recently visited a store that’s breaking all the rules. Instead of traditional aisles, they’ve created "experience zones" where customers can: - Watch fresh pasta being made - Sample wines paired with local cheeses - Learn knife skills from in-house chefs The result? Their customer retention is 3x the industry average, and their profit margins are soaring despite charging premium prices. The secret isn’t just fancy equipment – it’s how they use it to create memorable moments. One store manager told me: "We’re not selling groceries anymore. We’re selling experiences that happen to include food." What’s the most unique supermarket experience you’ve ever had? Share your story below – I bet it wasn’t about finding the cheapest prices!

In one of our latest consumers surveys, 72.4% of consumers agreed with the statement that "fast food is now too expensive to be a 'cheap' treat". This is one of the reasons why volumes in the QSR segment are under intense pressure. Some consumers have cut back, and many are thinking more carefully about where they dine. This has led to some interesting trends. Among financially squeezed consumers pizzas are often better value than burgers because they can be shared easily among more people. Among middle-income consumers, the cost differential between QSR and a casual restaurant has narrowed so some are opting to pay a bit more and get the better, more formal experience. QSR players like McDonald's need to reengineer menus to offer better value for money if they want to stem the tide of losing customers. So, cue the special offers! Adding more deals is an attempt to stimulate demand. It may help to drive sales as one of the biggest complaints from consumers is that prices are high, so special offers may entice some into spending. However, from our research, what consumers really want are everyday low prices, so constantly bombarding people with deals and offers – while helpful – is not necessarily the way to promote value for money. With inflation and soaring cost of living, more and more customers are seeking value. Discounts are here to stay. But what is important is how restaurant operators are strategizing discounts. If you don't discount correctly and identify the right customers to discount, you are going to lose revenue due to cannibalization. For example, you might want to discount your lapsed customers as part of a win-back campaign. Or give discounts to new customers to entice to make that second and third purchase and hopefully transition them to a loyal customer. But, you don't want to encourage discount hunting or give wrong discounts. Personalization and RFM-based segmentation is the right approach to identify the customers to offer discounts. A "one-size-fits-all" strategy is a sure-shot formula for failure.
