Colbeck and Wharton Michael (2006) discuss using public scholarship as a central organizing concept for integrating the domains of faculty work. They provide several definitions of public scholarship and a history of the categorization and evaluation of faculty work (e.g., teaching, service, research) and how this has shaped faculty effort. They propose re-integrating these domains to more accurately reflect how faculty conduct their work and connect back to the public service model of land grant universities. Penn State’s Public Scholarship Associates is used as an example.

As I was walking back, I stumbled upon this poster that reads "One of the top Yorkshire schools for progression to Oxbridge - 38 students in the last 5 years." Is it the whole point of schooling? Being able to produce students for the best universities? What does it say about other universities which are not much prestigious or ranked on top? What does it say about the other students who managed to get admitted into other universities? Should we categorise other students as less intelligent, less skilled and maybe unfortunate? University of Zurich's latest move to withdraw from Times Higher Education ranking seems to be a very logical decision. The university news states, "The ranking is not able to reflect the wide range of activities in teaching and research undertaken by universities." The news added, "Rankings generally focus on measurable output, which can have unintended consequences, for example leading universities to concentrate on increasing the number of publications instead of improving the quality of their content. Although rankings purport to comprehensively measure universities’ diverse achievements in teaching and research, they cannot do so as they reduce indicators to a score and focus on quantitative criteria." This presentation, featuring Insiya Bream and Darragh McNally, explains how the University of Maryland Global Campus created their CLRs, but largely focuses on the evaluation of the CLR: Do students use their new CLR? How do students view the CLR? Do employers view the CLR as useful and usable? Will the CLR change how professors approach their teaching?
