Trigger warning - contains references to suicide… As we begin December, many of us will be thinking about buying a tree, putting up decorations and looking forward to family gatherings, fun and time away from work. But for other people December will bring none of those things. It will be a time of loneliness and darkening thoughts. Please be aware of those around you and look out for any signs that someone is struggling, and if you feel that someone is having a tough time please don't ignore it. Talk to them, ask them how they're doing, do they need anything, what support can you give? Letting someone know that you see them and that you're there for them could change everything and be the reason someone's journey takes a different path. AKT believes that conversations about suicide are an essential way of helping to identify mental health and well-being issues and address them early on, before they have a chance to develop further. We now have two, free resource films: On the Edge, (https://lnkd.in/gTTe4Rwp) which is based in the construction industry, and ‘Courage’, which we made in collaboration with the Consortium for the Prevention of Suicide and which is based in the security industry (view it here… https://lnkd.in/eZhScVp5) and (view/download it here… https://lnkd.in/eSWpxJ8k). Both films can be used as part of your suicide prevention and mental health & well-being training and provide a way of starting those conversations which some people might find difficult. Also, as part of AKT’s ongoing commitment to address suicide and its prevention, we have developed a 90 minute LIVE, mental health & well-being programme, ‘A Perfect Storm’, (taster trailer here… https://lnkd.in/eQRHgARW) which gives people an opportunity to ask difficult but essential questions in a safe environment, and helps them to develop the skills to start the conversations which might make all the difference. If you think this would be useful as part of your suicide prevention training, please contact us at info@aktproductions.co.uk for more information. If we don’t talk about suicide nothing will change. JLC Vice Chair, TMF Mid-Atlantic Regional Lead, Public Speaker, Veteran Advocate, NAMI Ambassador, Board of Directors Member
The VA released the National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual report; I implore my network to read this report. A staggering statistic that is in this report is, "In 2021, the age-adjusted suicide rate of Veteran men was 43.4% greater than that of non-Veteran U.S. adult men, and the age-adjusted suicide rate of Veteran women was 166.1% higher than that of non-Veteran U.S. adult women." As a community, we must continue to make efforts to encourage veterans to: seek care, ask for help, and have open conversations about their mental health. Please know you're not alone and it's okay to reach out for help. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis please call 988 and veterans can press option 1 to reach the veterans crisis line. #veteranshelpingveterans #suicideprevention #mentalhealthawareness

Leadership Trainer | Executive Coach | DEI Consultant & Advocate | Certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor | Seeking Contract or Associate Opportunities
Post 2 of 3 : Suicide Awareness – Offering Support ❗ If you are concerned about someone who you think is exhibiting suicidal behaviour, (see my previous post on what these could be) the best approach is the direct approach using clear and direct language. ❗ ❗ CAUTION! Below is a simple summary and is not meant to be acted upon in isolation. Ideally the full training is required, so if you want to know more and get officially trained in Mental Health First Aid then please message me privately and I can support you. Contrary to wide-held belief, talking about suicide DOES NOT cause damage and is the first step to helping someone. So have the tough conversation: Listen Attentively: Sometimes, talking about their emotions and thoughts can provide relief. Listen without offering solutions or dismissive reassurances. DO NOT guilt-trip them either “What would your family do without you” is not helpful Ask Directly About Suicidal Thoughts: Important to ask direct questions in a caring way, such as "Are you thinking about hurting yourself?" or "Are you thinking about suicide?" Asking directly assess their level of risk. Ensure Safety: If the person expresses a plan or intention to harm themselves, it's crucial to remove any means of self-harm available (weapons, medications, etc) Seek Professional Help: Call your emergency services (999 for England) and ask for a silent approach so as not to distress the person further. Ask if they have a crisis plan. Offer to accompany them to a mental health service or help make an appointment. If they have a therapist or counselor, suggest they contact them. Access Resources: such as suicide helplines, emergency psychiatric services, or crisis text lines. These resources can provide immediate professional guidance and support. You can also call the Samaritans for free on 116 123 (UK and the Republic of Ireland) or text SHOUT on 85258 Do Not Leave Them Alone: If the risk is imminent, stay with the person or ensure that they are in a secure environment with others until further help is available. Follow Up: After the immediate crisis, keep in touch checking in regularly. Continuous support is crucial as they recover or seek ongoing treatment. Encourage Positive Lifestyle Changes: like activities that promote mental health, such as regular exercise, healthy eating, maintaining a regular sleep schedule, and social interaction. Know Your Limits: Recognize when the situation is beyond what you can handle and do not hesitate to call emergency services if you believe there is an imminent danger to the person’s life. 🆘 If you are struggling to cope, please call Samaritans for free on 116 123 (UK and the Republic of Ireland) or contact other sources of support, such as those listed on the NHS help for suicidal thoughts web page. Support is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, providing a safe place for you, whoever you are and however you are feeling. #suicideawareness #mentalhealthawarenessweek
