The EU recently passed the Nature Restoration Law, which sets a target of restoring at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea by the end of 2030. The regulation followed the pathway shown by the Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework agreed upon at the 2022 UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15). This initiative is aimed at not only protecting and conserving nature but also actively restoring it. It is becoming more crucial to take immediate action to tackle nature's alarming decline. Today at #COP28, Minister Guilbeault announced the Government of Canada’s commitment to introduce a federal #nature accountability bill next year. The bill would establish an accountability framework for the federal government in fulfilling its commitments under the Global Biodiversity Framework. Canada also announced that the Nature Champions Network is growing with France, Germany, the European Commission, Norway, the United States, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Spain, Jamaica, the United Kingdom, Costa Rica and Chad confirmed as Nature Champions. The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water has announced plans to update Australia's Strategy for Nature 2019-2030. The updates, which will be undertaken with all states and territories, will set national biodiversity targets and allow the government, businesses, and the community to protect and conserve Australia's biodiversity priorities. What the Paris Agreement is for climate, the Kunming-Montreal Agreement is for biodiversity. Established at COP15 in 2022, the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) features four main goals and 23 targets designed to address biodiversity loss. The key points of the agreement are: 1. Protection and Restoration of Ecosystems: Expand protected areas, restore degraded ecosystems, and prevent species extinction to maintain genetic diversity. 2. Sustainable Use and Management of Biodiversity: Ensure the sustainable use and management of biological resources to secure ecosystem services for future generations. 3. Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits from Genetic Resources: Distribute the benefits from the use of genetic resources fairly and protect traditional knowledge. 4. Financial Resources and Support: Provide sufficient financial resources and support for the implementation of the agreement, especially for developing countries.
