🔗 We are all connected Today we celebrate #InternationalDay of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. Raoni Metuktire is an Indigenous Brazilian leader and environmentalist. Born in 1932, he has seen a lot of change due to #climatechange. In #TheCarbonAlmanac, we feature his quote and it serves as a reminder that we are all connected. 🌍 "We all breathe this one air, we all drink the same water. We all live on this one planet. We need to protect the Earth. If we don’t, the big winds will come and destroy the forest. Then you will feel the fear that we feel."

Passionate about the environment and intertwining traditional Indigenous teachings with Western science.
Mending bonds with native species of present-day North America cannot be understated. If we do not make an effort to (re)connect with species our peoples have had deep relationships with for thousands of years, vital traditional knowledges and ways of being, will be lost. Ecosystems will degrade, local (and large-scale) extinctions will be commonplace—the Indigenous community feeling some of the greatest effects of our ever-changing landscapes and climate. The driving forces of my work are the land and Indigenous community. Our people cannot be separated from the land, as our cultures are deeply rooted in the soils of North America. I will do everything in my power to help Indigenous Peoples reclaim and revitalize their knowledges. It is our right, responsibility, and duty to do so. For our human and non-human relatives of past, present, and future generations. For Mother Earth.

Last month x2 amazing performers joined Greenpeace on their expedition to the Arctic. They created this hauntingly beautiful music video to encourage people to sign the petition to save our oceans. The video is 6 minutes long but it's well worth the watch! Our oceans are in crisis. Industrial fishing, oil drilling, warming temperatures and plastic pollution threaten one of the most important ecosystems on earth, which threatens all life as we know it. In order for our oceans to recover and thrive, scientists are telling us we must create a network of global ocean sanctuaries that are off limits to industrial activity. Greenpeace are calling for a global ban on deep sea mining and for governments to protect at least 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030. Please help by watching the video, signing the petition (link in the video) and become an ocean defender today 🌎 💚 #savetheoceans #greenpeace #protecttheoceans https://lnkd.in/eE6AMcg4

Indigenous knowledge is as a crucial part of solving many if our problems. First, it's important to acknowledge their place with the land long before any "modern" society intruded and changed that. In landscape and ecological terms, we see the result of that broken stewardship as degraded landscapes, broken water cycles, and destruction of life. There is a roadmap to heal landscapes and repair ecology through indigenous knowledge and wisdom. Their historical relationship with a place often offers a far deeper understanding of the principals and processes of that landscape than modern study can offer. It has been discounted for a very long time because of the framework it often gets transmitted through... stories, faith, language, etc. Only now are we beginning to understand that what we are "discovering", often was already known and understood, but through a framework that we didn't understand. Thank you CIFOR-ICRAF for sharing. #indigenousknowledge #ecologicalrestoration #naturebasedsolutions #CIFORICRAF #landscaperestoration
On Indigenous Peoples day, we honor the profound wisdom of Indigenous communities as nature’s stewards. 🌳 By embracing their knowledge, we can achieve sustainable development in harmony with nature, and create a world where the wisdom of the past intertwines with aspirations of the future.🌎 Celebrating #IndigenousPeoplesDay 💚 #TreesPeoplePlanet

A #JustTransition is not at odds with effective climate management and a net zero future: it IS the pathway. 🖤💛❤️ 💡First Nations leadership - 60,000+ years built the evidence base ✔️ Wise words 🎤 ‘The path forward is clear. If we are to create a sustainable future for everyone, Indigenous land and water management must be embraced as the powerful solution it is. This means recognising our leadership by committing to ongoing forums where our voices are heard, establishing an Indigenous-led peak body to lead our sector, and committing to meaningful partnerships where Indigenous knowledge is not just acknowledged but actively supported. The sector stands ready to lead - the question is whether others are ready to listen and follow.’ From Joe Morrison #FirstNations #NetZero #CareforCountry
The interaction between people and nature cannot be understated. A short piece to articulate the complexity and opportunity for Australia to build on lasting efforts of our ancestors.

🌊 World Ocean Day 2024 and Southern Africa’s Icons of the Deep 🌊 Today at ACE we are celebrating World Oceans Day! The purpose of this day is to inform the general public about the importance of our oceans and to hopefully develop a worldwide movement of people who advocate for the conservation and protection of these marine ecosystems. As they cover 70% of the planet's total surface area, our oceans are crucial for regulating the climate, supporting biodiversity, and providing resources for human survival. The waters around Southern Africa are particularly rich in marine life, as it hosts a diverse array of species that are essential to our oceans. Some of the most iconic and ecologically important are the: 🐧 African Penguin 🐬 Bottlenose Dolphin 🦭 Cape Fur Seal 🦈 Great White Shark 🐋 Southern Right Whale All of these species play a pivotal role in the marine ecosystems around Southern Africa. Without them, the natural balance of the food chain would be disrupted, which would negatively affect the health of oceans around the world. Southern Right Whales are also considered to be ecosystem engineers as they help to redistribute nutrients across oceans and without them, many coral reefs would collapse. Despite their importance, these species face numerous threats from human activities such as pollution, overfishing, and climate change. Today, on World Oceans Day, we encourage you to take meaningful actions and advocate for conservation policies to raise awareness and drive systemic change. In our fast-paced modern world, it is crucial to pause and reflect on the significance of our interconnectedness with nature. Our actions today determine the quality of life for future generations. As responsible stewards of the earth, we must acknowledge that we did not inherit this planet from our ancestors; rather, we are merely borrowing it from our children and the generations to come. This notion compels us to address pressing environmental challenges such as deforestation, particularly in the Amazon and Congo basins.
