You should only hire a sales team once you've tested, proven, and documented an entire sales engine... From sales goals, - target prospects, - lead generation strategies and sequences, - talk tracks, - sales meeting guidelines, - workflows and best practices, - and a smooth sales tech experience. Sales teams are for scaling revenue...not proving systems. The only (smart) founders who use new sales reps to prove sales systems expect to burn some cash to make it happen. Want to double sales? Just double the sales team! Right? Don't we all wish it were that easy? Just..... - Hire a lot more salespeople - Increase the sales quotas - Cut the territories in half - Split the inbound leads - Fire "underperformers" If you're at less than 80% quota attainment - You might have a skill gap - You might have a product gap - You might have a pricing problem - You might have a lead flow problem - Or you might be setting quotas too high But, hiring more salespeople won't fix this problem. Your (bigger) sales team will have: - Less leads per rep - Less accounts per rep - The problems above, but worse - Almost guaranteed lower attainment Fix these issues before you add to them. Sales is a high Skill game. By hiring Sales people with low skills at low salaries to save costs shall have deep implications wherein sales staff shall be simply busy and activity driven rather than outcome driven with results. Thus hire Sales people with Skills and Experience. It is an investment not an expense with a higher ROI. Thought to ponder.....Quality vs Quantity

Oh man... Do I hire a VP of Sales or an Individual contributor!??!?! ...I'm getting to big to manage all of this on my own and need help with the strategy as we find success.... But I ALSO need someone hammering the phones to STAY consistent! This is the conundrum that every founder faces at one point. The answer is that you don't need a full time sales leader (who are they going to lead right now?) but you DO need to get your Sh*T together and make sure that you have your technology flowing properly with all of your messaging refined before unleashing the kraken that is a sales person. HOWEVER, that does NOT mean you get an individual contributor to do ALL OF THIS ANNNNND expect them to run the playbook as well - its unreasonable and doesn't work - that's why the first sales hire statistically at any organization doesn't last a year. How do you ensure your sales team is always closing deals? Product knowledge is essential, but it’s not everything. Salespeople must also possess a deep understanding of their customer's wants, needs, and pain points. They need to empathize with their customers and offer solutions that genuinely address their concerns. The best salespeople are those able to put themselves in their customer's shoes, understanding not just what they want to sell, but what the customer needs to buy. So next time you're hiring for a sales position or thinking of how to improve your team's effectiveness, remember - the best salespeople aren't just knowledgeable about their product; they're experts in understanding their customers.
