# 1 missed opportunity in the circular economy? The design. 80% of our products' environmental impact is locked in the design phase. We can't give things a second life if we haven't designed them for it. If we wanna go circular, we need to redesign everything. There are 9 powerful strategies to unleash circular design. Tomorrow, I will be giving a full breakdown, packed with awesome examples in The Loop - my free weekly newsletter. I agree, design is key, Vojtech. Do you also have some good advice for services (no product involved)? How circularity can be applied on service providers?
The challenge is that many companies have very little to gain from designing longer lasting and easy to repair / upgrade products. We at ihopa and other companies are fighting to showcase companies that they can monetize on products lifetime. Once that is possible, design will change significantly. We have already seen huge steps in niche cases.
Also worth considering here is the "chicken and egg" dilemma. Meaning, if you design for circularity. You may also need to consider dependencies to the physical infrastructure capabilities needed for supporting the circular design and business model in practice (e.g., reversed logistics, sorting and disassembly, etc.). In a way that makes the value proposition attractive to its customers and other stakeholders. My understanding is that this is sometimes a major challenge for designers today. @designers please correct if I'm in the wrong here
There is a design principle called dfe (design for environment) set up by the TU Delft several decades ago that deals with exactly this issue. I used it designing my Piqo windturbines in 2009, with grear result! Vojtech Vosecky
It's much easier if you get off on the right foot Vojtech Vosecky
Ecodesign is a very important part in this. Modularity and an end-of-use concept is essential for new products. Curious what else will be in the breakdown 😊
That's why that electric snowmobile was amazing, Vojtech.
Couldn’t agree more. If it’s not truly sustainable by design, then it’s badly designed.
Fully back this, but where does the 80% figure come from?
