Never underestimate the power of small, everyday actions. Recycling just one paper cup might not seem like a game-changer. But what if you multiply that small act by the cumulative impact of many others making the same choice? Think about it this way… 🇮🇪 Approximately 1.3 million people live in the greater Dublin area.  🥤 Paper cups weigh about 18g each. 🐘 One elephant weighs about 6.8 tonnes. ♻️ So, if every person in Dublin recycled just one paper cup, that would equate to approximately 23.4 tonnes of recyclable material – the weight of around 3 and a half elephants! 🧑Each person. 🥤 Recycling just one cup. 🐘 3 and a half elephants’ worth of cups! ♻️ Now imagine the collective impact if Dubliners each committed to recycling 10 or 20 or even 100 paper cups a year. 🤯 That’s a lot of elephants. So, the next time you're tempted to toss a paper cup, think again. By recycling just one cup, you’re playing a small part in building a more sustainable future. Every action matters, large or small. Motueka’s family-run sustainable recycling depot Weka Peckers has just reached its one year Food & Beverage carton (F&B carton) #recycling anniversary, reporting an incredible exponential curve on take up. We recently visited the site and were delighted to hear from Merv and Ricarda about their journey in this space. As the region's one and only collector of F&B cartons, they've had to build awareness from the ground up, but it's working. While it took them six months to reach their first tonne of cartons (which get sent to Hamilton for recycling), it took them just two months to reach their next tonne, and they have since collected four tonnes of cartons (around 50,000 Packs)! The couple are expecting to collect one tonne a month in the near future, with cartons coming from individuals and cafes/restaurants from all over the region, including Kimi Ora Eco Resort, #ReviteMotueka, #TasmanStore, #ParkCafeMarahau, #JavaHutMapua and more. #GrassRootsRecycling supports collection for Weka Peckers in Nelson. WASS, the Westchester Alliance for Sustainable Solutions, started the year with a win: after its year-long campaign for the county to fund a zero waste plan, the 2024 Westchester budget has earmarked $90,000 for a waste reduction study. At WASS's November meeting, Alexis Goldsmith, National Organizing Director of Beyond Plastics, an organization dedicated to ending plastic pollution, spoke about how to ensure corporations reduce the amount of plastic waste they produce. To accomplish this in New York State, Senator Pete Harckam has sponsored the NYS Packaging Reduction And Recycling Infrastructure Act, which would, if passed, require some companies to reduce their plastic packaging and the toxic chemicals in that packaging and to pay municipalities to properly recycle packaging. Global Recycling Day started in 2018 to highlight the importance of recycling and to recognise the people, places and activities contributing to raising awareness of the initiative. Recycling helps to preserve our precious primary resources leading to an environmentally stable planet and a greener future for all. Ways to get involved today and everyday: ♻️ Learn about the recycling process and what can and cannot be recycled. Check your local council's website for more information. ♻️ Be a step ahead of needing to recycle by making small changes to your normal routine that avoid collecting more waste. You could begin by using a reusable water bottle and bags, use refillable shops for dry ingredients and cleaning products, and buy second-hand where possible. ♻️ Get involved with local community clean-ups, (or organise your own in an area you enjoy visiting!), share information around your circle, be proactive in campaigns against single-use plastic.

It's National Recycling Week with Planet Ark Environmental Foundation and it's got us thinking - more than usual - about how we can reduce, reuse and recycle in the office. ♻ At the start of September, we were at around 100 a month and now we're down to 27. That's 27 takeaway coffee cups. Our recycling box was overflowing with cups and we set ourselves a challenge to ditch and switch - ditch the takeaway cups and switch to reusable. Did you know that many takeaway cups can't be recycled due to a plastic liner? So we knew that switching to reusable cups would make a FAR bigger impact. ☕ We've also been farming ... worms, who make magic with our leftovers. It's another way we're reducing the amount of rubbish we create and while it might not be huge, we know that every small effort by each of us adds up. 🐛 Learn more about National Recycling Week: https://lnkd.in/dhBCr_7
