If you had 4 kids, imagine a landlord suggesting you were hiding a larger family and threatening to do checks at your rented home to verify the number of children there. This isn’t fiction – it happened to an African-Australian family in Melbourne’s west. It is among several stories we have heard of rental racism, which is when people make assumptions and discriminate against a renter on the basis of their ethnicity. It is also illegal. The University of Melbourne partnered with Tenants Victoria to investigate racism in the renting sector, and especially how it affects people’s health. The Australian Childhood Maltreatment study found that more than one in three girls and one in five boys experience child sexual abuse. It’s crucial that we understand, and implement, what works to prevent sexual abuse and sexual assault among young people. We know that we need to educate adults about the risk of #ChildSexualAbuse, and what they can do to prevent it. We also need to talk directly with children and young people, so that they are empowered with knowledge about what abuse is, and how to stay safe online and in real life. The Stride team at Life Without Barriers has released a new series called 'The Sexual Safety Series'. It is six videos for young people about important topics including respectful relationships, consent, and sexual abuse. The videos contain evidence-based messages that aim to help teenagers identify problematic behaviors. The videos are freely available to young people, parents, carers and workers, and are a valuable tool to kickstart conversations about sexual safety. I am always challenged when I see people in a crowded place such as in the city or a shopping centre with a client while wearing an identifiable #lanyard or #branded T-shirt?! why?? Because it always identifys the individual as to their involvement with a service. I see people with employment agency workers, I see people with Criminal Justice workers. I see people with a range of NGO services and in most cases I am able to identify what is the underpinning issue they are connected with the service. I am no rocket scientist by the way, but in 9 out of 10 cases I can not only identify the worker, I know the nature of their worker and who the client is. (Not personally). I cringe when I see a worker proudly boasting a lanyard or a T- Shirt with the corporate brand on it, wheeling a trolley with groceries, a pillow and doona and a couple of towels and maybe some new clothes. The dude is involved in a homeless service, a justice program, NDIS or other program. I have no issue with a person being proud of the organisation they work for or proud of the work they do, but we bang on so much about people's privacy and work so hard not to breech it, ain't we doing that very thing when we drag people around while we wear our 'Corporate Bling' with so much pride?? Are we giving much thought to those we are working with, that we don't "Red Light" them and make the stigma and stero types even harder to overcome??
