Effective communication between patients and medical professionals can be a daunting task albeit, an achievable one. To seamlessly achieve effective communication with our patients we must have P.E.F 📌 Patience Most times you might find patients doing the exact opposite of a clear instruction given to them, always understand they have alot running through their mind. Trust me they are not out to get you. Just be patient with them 📌 Empathy In order to understand your patient and communicate effectively with them, it's important you see things from their perspective. As a professional, this would entail "putting on their shoes" to see where it hurts.... I can hear you say "that's too many shoes to try on" 📌 Four Ears For communication to be effective, you should listen twice as much as you speak. National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) exists to inspire, educate and empower the public and providers about the importance of advance care planning. I know all too well that hard conversations are difficult to start but they are more devastating to avoid! Having hard conversations about death and wishes is ten times harder when you have received a new diagnosis or experienced a scary medical incident. This is why being proactive is so crucial! Have clear minded, sober, conversations with someone you trust. Even better, communicate your wishes through a guided conversation led by a caring professionals! Seek out My husband and I initiated an advanced care planning conversation more than 8 years ago. We were still in our thirties! However, with the work we were doing in the hospital we witnessed first hand the stress, horror, and harm of inaction for those left behind.
