On the value of collaboration between INN's newer, digital-first member newsrooms and longstanding public media members: "When public media is interacting with the new, digital outlets, these new service organizations, these new journalism organizations. It’s a richer way to reach different audiences -- those who get their information by text, those who get it by broadcast, those who get it by email newsletters. It’s more dynamic." Karen Rundlet spoke with WAMU 88.5 today. https://lnkd.in/e6q45Yjm

"For better or for worse, this is simply the nature of news media in 2024: underfunded, often forgettable, and built on an incentive structure that rewards people for telling them what they *want* to hear rather than what they *need* to hear." — Parker Molloy looks at the messy media landscape for 2024 in the latest edition of DEPTH PERCEPTION. It's not all doom and gloom: this is a year for longform journalism to shine. What are your bright spots for the media industry in 2024?
It's 2024. Embrace substance and forgo the fleeting.

While I admit to being stunned by this news, I have a few thoughts: I hear grumbling all the time about how Gannett papers are terrible because they lack local reporting and are filled with wire stories that don't resonate with the communities they serve. If these organizations truly re-invest the AP membership money into local reporting and newsrooms, this could be an important development for local journalism. I would like to believe they are sincere about re-investing. Am I optimistic? No. Hopeful? Yes. It's very possible this is yet another erosion of local access to high-quality journalism. This is definitely a development to watch. Even with the addition of Reuters, I wonder what the impact will be on the AP wire, losing the membership of all these contributing papers. https://lnkd.in/g9Uc8Eds
