“We don’t simply need more nonprofit news outlets, we need more strong nonprofit news outlets,” says INN CEO Karen Rundlet. INN's latest blog post discusses the role of mergers and partnerships in nonprofit news. Several mergers and networks have been created within the INN Network, including: the merger between Wisconsin Watch and Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service; the merger of Eden Prairie Local News (EPLN), Woodbury News Net and Prior Lake News Compass to form the Metro Nonprofit News Network; the merger of The Daily Catch and Hudson Valley Pilot; the merger of Mother Jones and Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting; CalMatters's acquisition of The Markup; The 19th's creation of The 19th News Network; and The WNET Group's acquisition of NJ Spotlight to merge with NJTV News in creating NJ Spotlight News. While surveyed nonprofit newsrooms reported small increases in salaries and overall financial stability, access to medical insurance has declined, according to INN's 2024 Member Compensation Study, which surveyed 149 nonprofit news outlets. Only 66% of surveyed outlets offer medical insurance coverage, down from 72% of outlets in 2022. The newsrooms will begin training in audience development, reader revenue and sponsor advertising this month. This cohort brings the total number of newsrooms trained since October 2023 to 314.
