Four in five adults with diabetes experience diabetes stigma. Diabetes stigma refers to the negative social judgements, stereotypes, and biases about diabetes. A recent international consensus statement on diabetes stigma, which several PSAD members are authors on, was published in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology. It summarises evidence for the harmful effects of stigma and translates evidence into 7 actionable commitments that can help bring an end to diabetes stigma. A JAMA Patient Page on obesity in adults. Obesity is a condition of excess body fat that affects 800 million people worldwide and approximately 42% of adults in the US. Obesity leads to a higher risk of death, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, gallbladder disease, metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease, stroke, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, depression, anxiety, and certain cancers (such as breast and colorectal cancers). Intensive behavioral programs can achieve weight loss of 5% to 10% after 6 to 12 months. FDA-approved injection medications for obesity include liraglutide, semaglutide, and tirzepatide; along with healthy lifestyle changes, they can result in an 8% to 21% weight loss. Surgery (laparoscopic gastric sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass) results in weight loss of 25% to 30% at 12 months. https://lnkd.in/etKN2FKp

🚨 Hypertension: A Call for Action! As we stand on the threshold of World Hypertension Day this month, let's unite in remembrance and action: Did you know❓ The World Health Organization and Imperial College London reported a staggering rise of over 1 billion adults aged 30-79 years with hypertension in just 30 years (1)?  📊 This alarming statistic is even more concerning, considering hypertension is a silent killer. Nearly half of those tested didn't even know they had hypertension. 🚨Plasma Renin Activity (PRA), a crucial player in the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone Axis, especially in resistant hypertension. "In patients treated with semaglutide, weight loss continued over 65 weeks and was sustained for up to 4 years." In addition to what appears to be cardiovascular protective effects from semaglutide before weigh loss even occurs, it's incredibly exciting to see these results as we know the recidivism rate in weight loss is extremely high. It also highlights the importance of combining GLP medication with intensive lifestyle interventions for optimal outcomes. This SELECT trial had a lower average weight loss (mean 10.2% at 208 weeks) than the STEP trials (mean 14.9% at 68 weeks) which is likely due to the lifestyle interventions (caloric restriction and exercises) that were required of the participants in STEP. As the pioneer of comprehensive obesity treatment, Calibrate continues to expand access to obesity care through our commercial program.
