About us
The Canadian Diabetes Association became Diabetes Canada on February 13, 2017, to shed the light on the diabetes epidemic Canada is facing. It's taking a monumental toll on our health. It's time to do more —much more. Diabetes Canada will be the driving force to build awareness of the disease and its implications, which are often misunderstood. Diabetes Canada will be the national voice for millions of Canadians living with diabetes or prediabetes. End Diabetes is our rallying cry to end the terrible health impacts of diabetes as well as its shame, blame, stigma and misinformation. It's also time to End Diabetes altogether with a cure. #EndDiabetes We are supported in our efforts by a community-based network of volunteers, members, employees, health-care professionals, researchers and partners.

For the more than four million people living with diabetes in Canada, access to affordable medications is critical. As Bill C-64, An Act Respecting Pharmacare, received Royal Assent, we applaud the Government of Canada for taking the initial steps towards the development of a plan to provide coverage for a range of diabetes medications. This will help tens of thousands of people living in Canada that currently do not have access to these medications. However, many of the concerns brought forth by both Diabetes Canada and JDRF/FRDJ Canada remain unanswered. Read our joint response here: https://ow.ly/BSk850TJUBR

Last week was a busy one for DC and its SMIDF team. Not only did they organize an Atlantic Diabetes Health Equity Summit in Halifax, but also a Diabetes Roundtable in Prince Edward Island. Both events were well attended and featured key presentations and engagements on the role of health equity, research and connections; topics such as homelessness, foot care, young adults, unaffiliated diabetes patients, devices, and many more were discussed. The report will be published in the coming months! https://ow.ly/2YqZ50TJ4tO.

Charlene’s experiences with diabetes stigma among family and community members can be all too common for people with the condition. However, it doesn’t have to be this way. Diabetes Canada has launched a campaign and the first-of-its-kind survey to learn more about how judgment, discrimination and misconceptions can impact people with diabetes in an effort to change the conversation about diabetes. https://ow.ly/i0kC50THWXf #worldmentalhealthday #diabetes #stigma

One in every 300 children live with type 1 diabetes in Canada, and more children are now being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Each of these children deserves to feel safe, included and supported at school. And yet, students who live with diabetes are often excluded from school or school-related activities, stigmatized, or discriminated against. Many are left to fend for themselves at school. Laura Syron, President & CEO of Diabetes Canada, wrote an op-ed for SaskToday.ca to call on governments to implement a mandatory standard of care that aligns with our Guidelines for the Care of Students Living with Diabetes.
