Young people have the power and potential to change the world 🌎 Don’t believe us? Just take a look at #GlobalYouthAmbassador Oluwaseun Ikusika who flew in and out of Cyprus - 24 hours before her graduation! - just so she could attend the UNECE ESD 2024 Forum 🤩 Why? She wanted to take her advocacy to the global stage and meet other youth leaders driving positive change and working to end the global #education crisis. We think it’s safe to say that the future is in good hands 🙌

On 18 September, Plan International, on behalf of the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack, delivered a joint statement at the UN Human Rights Council’s Panel on Quality Education for Peace and Tolerance for Every Child. In the statement we have highlighted: 🔴 Alarming statistics: GCPEA’s latest research reveals a 20% increase in attacks on education facilities and the military use of schools in conflict zones from 2022-2023. These attacks, often targeting girls, perpetuate intolerance, exclusion, and violence, with 28 conflict-affected countries reporting systematic patterns. ✅ Holding perpetrators accountable is essential to breaking the cycle of violence and restoring justice. We call for States to implement the Safe Schools Declaration, ensuring education is protected even in conflict settings, and to foster peacebuilding. We urge all Member States to adopt gender-responsive, child-rights-based policies to accelerate progress on the 2030 Agenda and the New Agenda for Peace. #ProtectEducation #SafeSchoolsDeclaration #GCPEA #PlanInternational #EndViolence #PeaceAndTolerance #HumanRights #EducationForAll #ChildRights

Today, September 9th, marks the International Day to Protect Education from Attack. It's a day to raise awareness about the devastating impact of war on education. In 2023 alone, over 22,500 children were affected by serious violations. It has been 1,087 days since the Taliban issued an official decree on September 18, 2021, closing the doors of schools to Afghan girls. This decree has barred girls from attending secondary education and stripping them of their basic right to quality education. For more insights, check out Palwasha Mirbacha´s podcast on the Community Implications of Education Bans in Afghanistan. Schools should be a safe place for students and teachers to learn, grow, and find support, not a target in conflict. Let's work together to protect education and ensure a better future for all children. #EducationUnderAttack #InternationalDayToProtectEducationFromAttack Photo: Roman Mager from Unsplash.

As we mark International Child Protection Week, we've been reflecting on the importance of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). These rights are not just words on paper—they are a commitment to ensuring the safety, dignity, and well-being of every child. As sector workers, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child informs our practice and support of First Nations families, refugees, and other humanitarian entrants. And these rights should remain front and centre when we discuss issues such as the age of criminal responsibility. By embedding the principles of the UNCRC into our work, we can create a more inclusive, equitable, and supportive system in which every child in every community gets a fair go. On this World Justice Day, the Law Students Council, Pakistan acknowledges the profound significance of justice in fostering global peace and equality. Our commitment extends beyond academia; it is a pledge to uphold fairness, equity, and the rule of law in all fields of life. In a world plagued by injustice, taking tangible forms before our very eyes in the form of rampant oppression in Palestine, Sudan, Congo, and many other parts of the world, our duty becomes more pronounced. We advocate for marginalized communities and challenge systemic inequalities, recognizing the power of our collective pursuit of justice. Today, we reaffirm our dedication to justice within our classrooms and communities. Let us stand in solidarity with those fighting for justice, knowing our voices hold the potential for meaningful change. On World Justice Day, let us recommit to the cause of justice. Together, let us strive for a world where fairness knows no bounds, hypocrisy is thwarted, and where justice reigns supreme.

I have the absolute pleasure of working with Sidra Moshinsky on the Jewish Museum's new anti-antisemitism education program. Sidra is an exceptionally passionate and talented educator, and most inspirational to me, she is a proud Jew. At the Museum, I work with hundreds of non-Jewish students every month. (The vast majority of our programs are experienced by non-Jewish people across the board). I often ask these students a question: "Have any of you ever met a Jewish person before? Or have any Jewish family or friends?" I can comfortably estimate that 95% of the students I talk to say no. 95% of these students have never met a Jewish person before, that they know of, and so the first time they do is when I talk to them at the Jewish Museum. This, to me, is the missing element in most antisemitism education. Young people are exposed to explicit or implicit antisemitism in the world and then have no frame of reference for how that may be incorrect or offensive, or what or who the Jewish people are. If they hear that 'all Jewish people are rich' they have no idea that that's not true because they've never met a Jew in real life. They have no idea of our differences or of our similarities. We are, to many, a stranger, an idea, something far off from their everyday life. Education programs that humanise Jewish people and introduce Jewish beliefs, religion and culture to non-Jews, like the programs available at the JMA, are invaluable. We create a frame of reference for students where previously they had none. We welcome young people to explore and experience our culture and encourage them to reflect on their own. And by doing so, we create a more cohesive, harmonious and understanding Australian community.
Combatting antisemitism requires transformative educational reform which looks beyond the current practice of one-off programs delivered in isolation from the broader societal context, writes Sidra Kranz Moshinsky. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gtxc6GtA

In 2023, we saw a dangerous wave of anti-Jewish hate sweeping across the world. Jews were attacked on the streets, harassed on campus and targeted online. In order to effectively combat this rise in antisemitism, we must define it! The IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism has become the most widely recognize barometer in the collective fight against Jew-hatred, serving as an essential tool to identify all forms of contemporary antisemitism. By the end of 2023, the IHRA definition had been adopted by 1,216 organizations, national and local governments, NGOs, universities, athletic clubs, and corporations, with 97 adoptions taking place last year alone. Together, we're using this definition to recognize antisemitism, create educational programs and shape policies. Learn more and read the report at https://lnkd.in/gCCY2kma
