One of my favorite things about joining the team at Civil Engineering/Lyles School is learning about the amazing ways our civil engineers are using their training practically to help communities around the US and even outside - earthquake rebuilding in Turkey, water projects in Rwanda, hurricane planning in Louisiana, and more. The last few years have been a whirlwind of planning policy in Ontario. The Doug Ford administration has aggressively advanced highly pro-density initiatives in its effort to fast-track construction and meet its ambitious goal of 1.5 million new homes within a ten year period. Generally cheered by the development community, these well-intended policies have at times caused confusion and chaos. And worse (see: 2023's Greenbelt scandal). Now roughly two years into the 10 year period, Ontario is well behind in new home construction starts, a key metric of our ability to meet historic levels of housing demand. Yet, proactive engagement from the province is still essential. The real estate development industry is looking to the province to continue to lead policy reform to smooth the way through municipal approval process logjam. On February 13, I will be a panelist on a ULI Toronto panel discussion that will consider what to expect from Queen's Park this year regarding the housing affordability and supply crisis.
