They are a great and accessible way for an aerial machine to get imaging or data points of a small area of the Earth’s surface without having to touch down, making it very useful for difficult to traverse or dangerous areas. Traditional ground-based surveys are often purpose-driven...the crews are there to get specific data for a specific reason to maximize cost/efficiency. Dense airborne LiDAR can be used for MANY purposes with a single dataset. And, you don't have to send out crews a second/third time to get that data you may have missed the first time! So what is Topobathymetric lidar survey? Topobathymetric lidar survey simultaneously measures and records three distinct surfaces – land, water, and submerged land using airborne laser-based sensors. While this technology shares some characteristics of traditional airborne lidar mapping, it also has significant differences that increase the understanding of the nearshore environment for improved marine resource mapping, benthic habitat mapping, shoreline delineation, nautical charting, and marine debris mapping.
