A huge thank you to Ruth Penfold-Brown for having me at Bloom this week.🌟 I'm so passionate about delivering impactful talks, especially to remarkable women who are driving change within their organisations 👏 As working parents, the journey can be both rewarding and challenging. That's why it's crucial to foster environments that support us in being set up for success at home and in our careers. A recent study revealed that a staggering ‼️80% of working parents are on the brink of burnout – and I was definitely part of this statistic for a number of years after having my son (that story is for another day) This has to change! 👇 During my talk, we delved into practical strategies and eye-opening insights aimed at empowering both working parents and those who support us. Here's a snapshot of what we covered: 1️⃣ Redefining Parental Leave: Let's acknowledge parental leave as the transformative period it truly is. The transition back to work post-baby 👶🏻 is multifaceted and often overwhelming. Recognising and supporting this journey is vital for both parents and their support networks. 2️⃣ Embracing Matrescence and Patrescence: Just as adolescence marks a significant transition to adulthood, matrescence and patrescence signify the transformative journey into parenthood. Understanding these processes helps us navigate the challenges and changes with greater empathy and awareness. 👉 If we spoke about these terms more in our society, it's been proven to reduce post-natal depression in both mothers and fathers. 3️⃣ Work-Life Balance is a myth: Instead of striving for an impossible work-life balance, let's focus on setting healthy boundaries. Honoring these boundaries 🙏🏼such as respecting commitments like the nursery run, is essential for fostering a supportive workplace culture. 4️⃣ Energy Management for Resilience 💥 Self-care tends to take two things that working parents have in short supply - high disposable income and time 😳 So we need to think about this differently by managing our energy effectively through prioritising activities that recharge us and letting go of energy-draining tasks. This is how we can build resilience and thrive in both our parenting and our careers. As we strive to champion inclusivity and support for working parents, it's crucial to recognise that parenting was never meant to be done in isolation. In today's world, with its unique challenges, we need infrastructures, unwavering support, and strong allies at work to navigate the complexities of modern parenting successfully. 💼👨👩👧👦 #WorkingParents #SupportiveWorkplaces #empowerment

Wearing my MRS Unlimited hat I would love to invite friends and connections who are researchers, research buyers and insight leaders to complete a short survey MRS Unlimited Steering Group have launched (sponsored and designed by Open Inclusion). The goal is to better understand the views of people working in research around disability-inclusive awareness, attitudes and skills, both current and desired. It has just been launched and will remain open until 15 September. The survey can be found here - https://lnkd.in/edca8VJR The survey seeks to garner a breadth of perspectives from those who conduct or support quantitative, qualitative or mixed research approaches in the UK and globally. The insights generated will help us at MRS Unlimited to prioritise our efforts to support progress across the market research industry. Myself and Alexandra McCarthy were recently invited to speak on a panel at St. Scholastica’s College, an all girls high school - the theme was “Voice of the Voiceless/Voices of Advocacy” , and how those on the panel can share their story in respect to how they are a voice of advocacy in their community to educate students. I was definitely nervous at first!  but knew we had something valuable to share with the young women and men of our next generation. It was a fantastic opportunity to continue to spread the word about Wildflowers - what we do and what we stand for, and educate our younger generation as they are the ones who are going to help make the changes we need in the world- the next thought leaders. For us this is incredibly important in regard to mental health and disability - reducing the stigma and spreading awareness is work that there is a continuous need for. My advice to students on Advocacy was to explore every thought you have, because every thought you have may present an opportunity. But even if nothing comes from a thought or passion, that’s still okay because you have learnt from the experience, and it is trying and failing over and over that eventually leads to success. We were asked about the challenges we experienced on our journey - a big one for me was that great ideas don’t always have a positive uptake. Sometimes we have these great ideas and we implement them, but we don’t see what we expected. So it’s important to reflect, go back to the community and ask “What could we do differently next time? What do you need?” - going back to ones lived experience, being in their shoes, and then hearing that feedback and advocating for that to make change in future offerings. When I was asked what success looked like to me, it really came down to the community trust we have built. Initially a lot of our referrals and intakes when we started Wildflower Holistic Services came through other health professionals like GP’s, and schools etc. Now, a large percentage of our referrals come through word of mouth, which is a reflection of our success in meeting our communities needs - what we are offering and how valuable they find our service. Our journey in advocacy continues to inspire and motivate us, and we hope to instil the same passion in the next generation of thought leaders.
