We just wrapped up week 1 of Techstars and I can't even put into words how life changing this week was. From the structured lectures, to meeting investors excited about Myna (3 meetings next week!), it was a whirlwind of a time here in San Diego. Even more amazing than that was the emphasis that Techstars put on the founders- on us as people. Some highlights: * The connection: Silently walking with another founder we were randomly paired with, and listening to them talk for 15 minutes without responding. I learned that me and another founder shared a common bond over Asian identity growing up in the rural south. * The Give first mindset: As each team showcased their demos, the other teams immediately went to work to help in any way they could. Melvin and I connected the supply chain optimization startup with a potential customer who needs their exact product, and founders in the restaurant space immediately began setting us to their own connections. Everyone wanted to help each other. * The Community: CXOs had a time where they could just be paired into groups and share with each other our struggles, questions, and more. I learned so much from the other CEOs, and I realized I'm not alone in my thoughts. * The amazing people: We had UN peacekeepers, Gobi desert travelers hallucinating in the desert, and even a founder who raced goats with Richard Branson.... yes goats not boats * The network: There is no network like the Techstars network. Any person we could have even thought of wanting to speak to is one or two connections away through the network. Also being on a boat spending time with this amazing group of future unicorn founders doesn't hurt either. I'm more fired up than ever. This is just the start for Myna. Stay tuned.

At Pear VC we have been developing PearX for the most elite founders who have the grit and vision to make their companies succeed. We've funded category defining companies like Doordash, Dropbox, Vanta, Aurora Solar, Guardant Health, Affinity and have thought hard about what the best founders need when they are just getting started. We believe in small batches of 20 companies or less so we can work closely with each team. Small batches allow us to do a lot more: 1. Capital: $250k-$2m. Raise as much or as little as you need. One sized doesn't fit all. 2. Founder to founder: Work closely with one of our partners, most of whom have been founders who have started and sold their companies. 3. Join an incredible community of founders: We kick off the program with Camp Pear, a 3 day retreat where you get to know a group of founders as ambitious as you. 4. Access Pear Studio: our beautiful 30k sq ft office in SF which you'll be able to use for your first year of company building. 5. Build a scalable GTM motion: work directly with @joseluisagell and our GTM team to find your early customers and build the engine to scale your business. 6. Recruit the best talent: With PearX, you get an in house recruiter to source, interview and hire your cofounder, first engineer and early team. We've just launched this at PearX and have already hired 25 people for our companies 7. Raise more capital: ~90% of our teams raise additional capital after PearX. We help you create your pitch, build the story, target investors and help you negotiate and close the best round. Read more about PearX here: https://lnkd.in/g5_Cxe9Q Apply to our summer batch here: https://lnkd.in/gAZRN4cb Application Deadline May 1.

Every month, I host a dinner with 5 other founders. But a year ago, I wouldn't even go to a single networking event. Here's what changed: When I first got to Austin, I had heard a lot about the tech / startup scene. So I tested the waters, hitting several founder events, startup groups, etc., but it didn't live up to the hype. So, for our first two years, we completely focused on building. We didn't network or meet other founders much. Looking back, we probably swung the pendulum too far to the other side. In June, we decided to change things up. We started to get more involved in Austin's tech community by organizing intimate monthly dinners with 5 CEOs/founders from totally different industries in Austin. Here's what we've learned: 1) Austin finally has a lot of really legit founders. There's a wide range of talent here - across tons of interesting industries like biotech, photonics, identity, cybersecurity, etc. 2) Talking to founders outside our industry helps bring new perspectives. I think about my business all day, and it's refreshing to think about someone else's for a while 3) Most founders face the same problems, regardless of their business - so it's fun to hear how others think about the same challenges What's neat about Austin is that it's still developing. There aren't established hierarchies or SF-style tech mafias. It feels like a greenfield for startups. If you're a founder in Austin or if you know great founders in Austin - hit me up! Always looking for great new people to invite.

CEO of DrugCards | Helping pharma to cut time for literature review | Mentor for Early-Stage B2B Startups
Last week, I had the amazing opportunity to join the panel at Meetups4Startups with CfE Accelerator UCU in Lviv. Sharing the stage with brilliant minds like Oleg Z. from AISDR, Vol Zastavny from Solva (Newoldstamp, and Oleh Pankiv from WeOne was truly an enriching experience. Here are a few nuggets of wisdom I brought back: 🌟 Choose Your Partners Wisely: It's crucial to have clear agreements from the start. It helps in dividing responsibilities, equity, and more. 🔑 Leadership Matters: Establish who's in charge early on. Strong leadership is not only respected by teams but also by investors. 🛠️ Hiring Is Key: Take your time to hire the right people but be quick to let go of those who don't fit. A toxic environment benefits no one. 💡 Focus on Team Health: Regular lunches, walks, and open communication can significantly boost team morale and productivity. 🚫 Keep Core Functions In-house: While outsourcing can be helpful for certain roles, keep strategy, sales, marketing, and product development close to home. 🧑🤝🧑 Timing for HR: Bring in HR expertise at the right moment. As you grow, the dynamics of your team will change, requiring professional management. 📈 Fail Fast, Learn Fast: Making mistakes is part of the journey. Embrace them as learning opportunities. 🎨 Culture is Crucial: Develop a strong company culture that aligns with your vision and mission. This sets the tone for your team and attracts like-minded individuals. Being part of Meetups4Startups was not just about sharing our journey at DrugCards but also about learning from each other, fostering a community of innovation and resilience among startups. Let's keep pushing boundaries together! Spacially thanks for my team Artem Horilyk, Olha Lysiuk, Olga Frait, for supporting me! #Entrepreneurship #StartupLife #TeamBuilding

When William Stone and I left our non-tech roles at a big bank and a private equity firm to launch a startup together, the scepticism was loud and clear. They said, “Why would they leave their secure jobs to risk it all on starting their own business?” “How can they build a startup coming from big corporate backgrounds?” “Why would they start a business together…as a couple?” We can’t tell you how many times we’ve heard these questions. The simple answer to all of them is that we saw an opportunity to help people. The way we see it, if we have the skills to help, we have a responsibility to act. Many didn’t believe in us. Many thought we couldn’t do it. Some told us to give up. Some wanted us to fail. But we ignored the doubters and stayed focused on what truly matters: the problem we are solving. They say finding a co-founder is like finding a life partner. Fortunately, we’ve found both in each other. And it’s our secret weapon. We have believed in each other since day one. We have continued to believe in our mission and company. And when someone else joins in that belief? It’s magic. Today, marks a significant milestone, as we celebrate joining the Techstars Fall 2024 Cohort—the first EVER in San Francisco. Thank you, Techstars San Francisco, for believing in William and I for the opportunity to become better founders and leaders. We are filled with pride and humility, to be selected from thousands of applicants, as one of only twelve startups. So… to answer your questions, why did we leave? Because we believe in our combined ability to help thousands, perhaps more, succeed. And that impact makes any sacrifice worth it. ✊️, Dominique & William -- Want to follow our journey?
