Thrive Luncheon - Closing the Gap June 6, 2024 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM (EDT) Description Women in the U.S. workforce continue to struggle for equal pay and face challenges advancing in their careers. While women make up nearly half of the workforce, research shows that women continue to earn less than men and struggle for equal representation. “A 20-year-old woman just starting full-time, year-round work stands to lose $407,760 over a 40-year career compared to her male counterpart” (National Women’s Law Center Surprisingly, some of the industries with the largest pay gaps have the greatest share of female workers. Women outnumber men in earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees and are nearly on par in getting medical and legal degrees and still men are more likely than women to get the highest paying leadership roles. The gender pay gap also varies considerably by race and ethnicity, and by other demographics. Join us as the Chamber’s Senior VP of Programs & Initiatives, Celeste Granger, presents an overview of the disparity in pay and leadership opportunities for women in the workforce. At the heart of women empowerment is the concept of sisterhood; a bond that fosters resilience, encouragement, and shared success. Through the shared experiences, mentorship, and advocacy that come with this sense of community, women uplift one another. However, the strength of women supporting women is not only in the support given but also in the transformational power it has on individuals and communities. There is honestly boundless possibilities that arise when women come together. Whether in professional pursuits, personal endeavors, or societal change, the strength derived from mutual support among women amplifies resilience and fortitude. This creates a positive ripple effect, inspiring future generations and fostering a culture of inclusivity and empowerment that transcends societal boundaries. As women, we owe it to ourselves to build sisterhoods and up lift fellow women to new heights and collectively shaping a world where every woman’s success is not just acknowledged but celebrated - because when one woman wins, many more women are empowered.

Last week, we had the pleasure of presenting to Cedar Valley Women Connect on creating, achieving, and maintaining balance in our lives. If this is something you struggle with, we invite you to do this exercise: Make a list of your values. (These values are the guiding principles with which we strive to live our lives.) Then, after you list out your values, reflect back on the last week. Where have you said yes to something outside of your values? Being aware of our "yes's" and if they are in alignment with our values or not will give us a clearer picture of where we could be out of balance. The question then becomes - Why am I saying yes to something that doesn't align with my values? And that is where we can grow and learn a lot as leaders and as important members of our families to create a better trajectory forward. - Nick Kuhle & Kayla Becker

For the last few months, as I walk my dogs early every morning, I have been watching this tree fort in my neighborhood go up piece by piece. It brought back memories of my childhood and the treehouses my brother and his friends used to build in the woods near our house in Massachusetts. Specifically, I remembered the "no girls allowed" signs, and his stories of the (sometimes stupid) things they would do inside. The signs are missing on this fort, but I hoped that the boys who are building it are using a little more common sense. This past weekend, in a break from our routine, the pups and I hit the pavement on a Saturday afternoon. As we turned the corner near the fort, I found not boys occupying the space, but two girls. They were laughing and building more layers on the tree – including the addition of their own sign, which, far from excluding others, it instead declares their ownership. As I reflected on this experience, I realized how much it was a check of my assumptions and my own gender biases. It is a testament of how the lens through which we see the world shapes our thoughts, feelings and actions, often without our even realizing it. It also struck me how times have changed, how gender roles are evolving. This treehouse, once a symbol of exclusion, now stands as evidence of inclusion and the breaking down of unseen barriers. It fills me with hope for future generations of girls and women, that they won't be constrained by invisible limits but instead empowered to pursue their passions and dreams, whether it's building treehouses or reaching for the stars. #diversityinclusion #genderequity #leadership
