Diversity of thought, experience and background is fundamental to structured decision making. It encourages assumptions to be challenged, and alternatives to be considered. When we’ve worked on equity, diversity and inclusion projects for clients, we’ve been asked about the difference between diveristy and inclusion. Here’s what we say: - Diversity is a fact. We’re all different after all! - Inclusion is an act. It’s a choice. You can choose to be inclusive, or not. Which is great news for businesses because it means that every organisation can become more inclusive. It’s a matter of choosing to be! Leaders need to act. Everyone needs to act. And you need to persevere. Cultures need to be nurtured. #belonging #inclusion #diversity #equity #EDI #DEI #ChooseToInclude #InclusiveBusiness #culture #leadership Image description: a sign painted with multicoloured triangles with the words, you belong in white paint. There are lush green plants at either side of the sign.

Is Diversity, Equity and Inclusion too western-centric? Pooja S. co-author of 'Rewire: A Radical Approach to Tackling Diversity and Difference,' is a coach, counselor, consultant, and founder of Rewire Consulting, specializing in organizational development, diversity & inclusion, leadership, and culture. In her recent reflection on a virtual workshop with a multinational team, she discovered a need to delve deeper into the cross-cultural applicability of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts. The workshop, designed for Western contexts, revealed a gap in understanding when discussing concepts like 'microaggressions' in a culturally diverse setting, prompting a reevaluation of the applicability of DEI frameworks across cultures. Pooja emphasizes the relatability of inclusion and exclusion experiences globally but underscores the challenge of transposing conceptual frames, rooted in US-centric language and rhetoric, to diverse cultural contexts. She highlights the fundamental cultural differences in how individual uniqueness and relationships are valued, illustrating that the significance of 'inclusion' varies between individualistic and collectivist societies. Additionally, she explores how power differentials linked to identity aspects like race, language, and caste differ across cultures. She advocates for cultural humility over expertise, urging practitioners to acknowledge their cultural blind spots. In conclusion, she calls for a global and inclusive approach to DEI, emphasizing the need to question assumptions, examine underlying values, and align the purpose of DEI work with the diverse contexts it serves. I wrote about the need to focus on behaviors and behavioral expectations, and not stop at beliefs, to advance DEI work in organizations. Focusing on behaviors ensures everyone knows what's expected of them while still respecting each person's ability to bring their whole selves to the workplace. Up now on the Equity At Work™ blog!
