Meta’s latest breakthrough in AI, Llama 3.1, is here, and it's set to revolutionize the landscape of open-source technology! With the potential to rival the most advanced private models like GPT-4, this marks a pivotal moment for AI enthusiasts and professionals. Llama 3.1, with its 405 billion parameters, offers groundbreaking capabilities in coding, math, and reasoning. However, as Victor Botev from Iris.ai aptly points out, “This immense scale limits accessibility, as many researchers and organisations lack the infrastructure to effectively utilise such massive models. The environmental impact of training and running these behemoths is also a growing concern that cannot be ignored.” This balance between raw performance and practical application is crucial as we advance in AI development. Meta has released a new series of powerful AI models and a manifesto forcefully advocating for the open-source approach. The document serves as both a philosophical treatise and a rallying cry for proponents of open-source AI. Meta has taken on a very different strategy with AI compared to its competitors OpenAI, Google DeepMind and Anthropic. Those companies sell access to their AIs a strategy that allows them to protect their intellectual property, monitor the use of their models, and bar bad actors from using them. By contrast, Meta has chosen to open-source the “weights,” or the underlying neural networks, of its Llama models—meaning they can be freely downloaded by anybody and run on their own machines. That strategy has put Meta’s competitors under financial pressure, and has won it many fans in the software world. But Meta’s strategy has also been criticized by many in the field of AI safety, who warn that open-sourcing powerful AI models has already led to societal harms like deepfakes, and could in future open a Pandora’s box of worse dangers. #meta #ai #generativeai #llm #opensource #llama #model https://lnkd.in/g7XX_iY4

AI race heats up as OpenAI, Google and Mistral release new models 1. OpenAI, Google, and French startup Mistral released new versions of their frontier AI models within 12 hours of each other. 2. This flurry of releases is in preparation for the launch of the next major version of GPT, the system behind OpenAI's popular chatbot Chat-GPT. 3. Other companies such as Meta and Google also released their own advanced language models, including Meta's Llama and Google's Gemini Pro 1.5. 4. Mistral, founded by former colleagues of Meta's AI team, took an "open source" approach and published their model, Mixtral 8x22B, for anyone to download and build upon. 5. However, there are concerns about the potential dangers of releasing such powerful AI models without proper oversight, and some experts suggest that the current "large language model" approach may be reaching its limits. Mark Zuckerberg's recent Meta AI manifesto positions him and his company in a new light. Zuckerberg, previously associated with controversies and data privacy scandals, is attempting to rebrand himself as a leader in responsible AI development through open-source initiatives. Zuckerberg's letter came at the launch of Meta’s Llama 3.1 405B – the latest version update to their Llama series of large language models (LLMs). Llama 3.1 made history by becoming the world’s largest open-source LLM till date with 405 billion parameters, overtaking NVIDIA’s Nemotron-4-340B-Instruct which has 340 billion parameters in comparison. We analyse the manifesto's content, trying to explore Zuckerberg's motivations for open-sourcing AI technology and the potential benefits and challenges associated with this strategy. And does this ultimately help him repair his damaged public image by embracing a more transparent and collaborative approach to AI advancement? #AI #LLM #Llama #FoundationalModel #MarkZuckeberg #MetaAI
