#Topics Facebook Researchers Test AI's Intelligence and Find It Is Unfortunately Quite Stupid [ad_1] In a new intelligence test, AI got *destroyed* by humans.Failing GradeA team of researchers at Facebook's parent company Meta has come up with a new benchmark to gauge the abilities of AI assistants like OpenAI's large language model GPT-4.And judging by current standards, OpenAI's current crop of AI models are all... still pretty stupid.The team, which includes "AI godfather" and Meta chief scientist Yann LeCun, came up with an exam called GAIA that's made up of 466 questions that "are conceptually simple for humans yet challenging for most advanced AIs," per a yet-to-be-peer-reviewed paper.The results speak for themselves: human respondents were capable of correctly answering 92 percent of the questions, while GPT-4, even equipped with some manually selected plugins, scored a measly 15 percent. AI race heats up as OpenAI, Google and Mistral release new models 1. OpenAI, Google, and French startup Mistral released new versions of their frontier AI models within 12 hours of each other. 2. This flurry of releases is in preparation for the launch of the next major version of GPT, the system behind OpenAI's popular chatbot Chat-GPT. 3. Other companies such as Meta and Google also released their own advanced language models, including Meta's Llama and Google's Gemini Pro 1.5. 4. Mistral, founded by former colleagues of Meta's AI team, took an "open source" approach and published their model, Mixtral 8x22B, for anyone to download and build upon. 5. Meta has released a new series of powerful AI models and a manifesto forcefully advocating for the open-source approach. The document serves as both a philosophical treatise and a rallying cry for proponents of open-source AI. Meta has taken on a very different strategy with AI compared to its competitors OpenAI, Google DeepMind and Anthropic. Those companies sell access to their AIs a strategy that allows them to protect their intellectual property, monitor the use of their models, and bar bad actors from using them. By contrast, Meta has chosen to open-source the “weights,” or the underlying neural networks, of its Llama models—meaning they can be freely downloaded by anybody and run on their own machines. That strategy has put Meta’s competitors under financial pressure, and has won it many fans in the software world. Yann LeCun, chief AI scientist at Meta and one of the founding fathers of AI, declares that LLMs that power GAI will never be able to reason like humans. Despite many’s assumptions that it’s only a matter of big models and processing power before the likes of ChatGPT catch up with us humans,  LeCun believes they are fundamentally superficial and limited – and he’s not alone in this. They have ‘very limited understanding of logic . . . do not understand the physical world, do not have persistent memory, cannot reason in any reasonable definition of the term and cannot plan . . . hierarchically’. “It certainly appears to most people as reasoning — but mostly it’s exploiting accumulated knowledge from lots of training data,” LeCun said, but added: “[LLMs] are very useful despite their limitations.” Admittedly, he has an axe to grind as he’s leading a team of 500 to develop a new model of human-level General AI that he calls SuperIntellignece, which takes an approach called ‘world modelling’.
